AIKEN, SC - Furman Delano Knight, age 79, of Aiken, South Carolina, died on March 28, 2017 peacefully in his sleep. Delano was born on July 30, 1937 in Sumter, South Carolina to Furman Jenkins Knight and Dorothy Whaley Knight. In 1955 he graduated from Edmonds High where he was class president all 4 years. While in his senior year in high school, Delano won the SC men's doubles tennis championship. He graduated with a degree in Industrial Engineering from the George Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) in 1959 with highest honors. Delano moved to Aiken with his family in 1963 and worked at the Savannah River Site until his retirement in 1993. His retirement years were spent consulting on computer infrastructure with companies like Georgia Pacific, Pfizer, Comdisco, and Siemens throughout the United States. Also, he learned to fly small aircraft at the Aiken Airport. Delano loved to travel and to share his experiences with his family and friends. Some of his adventures led him to walk on the Great Wall of China, sail from Bermuda to the British Virgin Islands, raft down the Colorado River though the Grand Canyon, attend the 1991 Georgia Tech football National Championship game, attend the Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta 1996, explore the tunnels under one of the Great Pyramids in Egypt, and swim with the sharks in Tahiti, French Polynesia. He was preceded in death by his father, Furman Jenkins Knight; mother, Dorothy Whaley Knight; his brother, Richard Warren Knight; and his brother-in-law, James Henry Fowles II. Delano loved his wife, Blanche Cox Mayes Knight for 58 years. He was very proud of his son, Furman Delano Knight, Jr. of Aiken, SC and son, Robert Mayes Knight and his wife, Suzan Saturday Knight of Winnsboro, SC; granddaughter , Marisa Knight and her fiancé, Justin Gravano of Charleston, SC; grandson, Joshua Knight of Clemson, SC; grandson Nicholas Knight of Winnsboro, SC; "big" sister, Carol Knight Fowles of Eastover, SC; sister-in-law, Sarah Lou Mayes of Columbia, SC; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and two great-great nephews. The family would like to express their eternal thanks for the excellent, compassionate care from Emily Wheeler, Felicia West, and Andrea Johnson of Tenderly for the Elderly; Chartez Kitchings, Annette Dickerson, and Connie Landy as well as Belinda Jones of Regency Hospice.
