I served with Mr. Sortore on the USS E.A. Greene DD 711 in the years '65 - '67. I was an enlisted man and not in his division so we did not have much interaction. Having said that, when he was acting XO before we left for our WestPac cruise I was having a difficult personal time and had been given the chance to leave the navy. It fell to Mr. Sortore to have a conversation with me regarding my future service. Without going into detail, I will say that his level headed points and most of all his encouraging words illuminated the right path. I am and will be forever grateful. I'm glad I had the opportunity to thank him by email a few years ago. My condolences to his friends and family. May his memory be a blessing.

There are too many stories about my father to share here. A few that come to mind immediately - he always looked for opportunities for us to experience new things and learn about other cultures and history, he always felt our burdens along with us, and counseled us when we needed it. He guided us with a firm, gentle hand. I inherited my dad's love of reading, history, debate, and travel. He always enjoyed new challenges - even taking to the new iPhone. He will be sorely missed.

Marion - so sad to learn of Jad's passing. I had the honor of playing golf several times with Jad when he visited Jim and Judy Witmer in Charlotte. In just those few visits he made me feel like a long time friend - I am honored to have met Jad and read the tributes of others. Please accept my deepest sympathy.

My Granddad was loving, hilarious, intelligent, and always wanted to teach his grandaughters valuble life lessons. I know we have all learned a lot from him over our lives and will never forget his impact. I have too many good memories to share. I will always cherish my time spent with him-- the last time being his 75th birthday party in Williamsburg, VA. Even though it was HIS birthday- he gave each guest in attendance $75. This just shows how caring, kind, and outrageous he was on a day that should've been all about him. I will miss his emails, his laugh, his stories, and his big hugs. I love you Granddad!
