Obituary of Mary Helen Whyte

A Requiem Mass for Mrs. Mary "Skip" Helen Whyte will be celebrated at 10 am on Monday, June 25, 2012 at St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Southlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon, 2-4 pm at George Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 211 Park Ave., SW, Aiken. Pallbearers will be: Bruce Whyte, Paul Ness, Bill Nolan, Mark Register, Jeff Wilson and Jean-Paul Beyak. Honorary pallbearers will be Peter Caldwell and members of the ARMC Ladies Auxiliary. Mrs. Whyte, 93, of Aiken, died on Tuesday, June 19, 2012 at her residence after a brief illness. A daughter of the late Charles & Katherine Bazemore Belser, she was born in LaGrange, Georgia, and had lived in Aiken since 1977. An US Army veteran of WWII, she served as Nurse and achieved the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. Mrs. Whyte worked in several hospitals in Massachusetts, before retiring and moving to Aiken where she was a member of the T.R.O.A. and a lifetime member of the ladies auxiliary at Aiken Regional Medical Centers. She volunteered her time with the American Red Cross as well the public schools in Aiken. Mrs. Whyte was a communicant of St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, James Whyte II, a son, James Whyte III and a brother, Charles Belser. She is survived by daughters, Peggy Whyte of Aiken and Ruthie Ness Paul of New Holland; a son, Bruce Whyte Michelle of Spencer, Mass., three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to The American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210 or The Salvation Army, PO Box 439, Aiken, SC 29802.
