Violet Gary Winn, widow of Dr. Thomas Meredith Winn, Sr. of Covington, Virginia died on July 4, 2005 at Aiken Regional Medical Centers. Mrs. Winn, who had lived in Covington and Roanoke, Virginia, and more recently at Shadow Oaks in Aiken, was a daughter of Herbert Henry and Virginia Walthall Gary and was born in Lunenburg County, Virginia. She was a graduate of Longwood College and after moving to Covington, taught school there for four years before her marriage. Mrs. Winn was an active member of the Covington Baptist Church, the Women?s Club, Mountain River Garden Club, and the Covington Choral Club. She was also associated with the Girl Scout Council and the Allegheny Historical Society. After moving to Roanoke she became a member of Calvary Baptist Church, and when in Aiken she was connected with Cornerstone Baptist Church. Mrs. Winn was predeceased by her son Dr. Thomas Meredith Winn, Jr. Survivors include her son Dr. Willard Gary Winn and his wife Marilyn of Aiken, the niece she reared Estelle Winn Echols and her husband Tim of Charlottesville, and her daughter-in-law Mary Meade Gordon Winn of Roanoke. She is survived by six grandchildren: Thomas Myers Winn of Columbia, Catherine Ann Winn of Raleigh, Thomas Meredith Winn, III of Roanoke, Eustace Gordon Winn of San Miguel, Mexico, Andrew Meade Winn of Washington, D.C., and Meredith Gilmer Winn of Roanoke. She is also survived by five great grand children. Family members in Aiken will receive friends at George Funeral Home Historic Downtown Chapel on Tuesday July 5 from 6:30 ? 8:30pm. Graveside funeral services are scheduled for Friday, July 8th at 11am at the Kenbridge Cemetery in Kenbridge, Virginia. The family will also receive friends there following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to a favorite charity. Oakey?s Roanoke Chapel is handling the arrangements through cooperation with the George Funeral Homes Historic Downtown Chapel
