A Mass of Christian Burial for John Henry Griswold, Sr., will be celebrated on Thursday, October 23, 2003 at 11am at St. Mary Help of Christians Church, Aiken. Interment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 6-8pm at George Funeral Homes Historic Downtown Chapel 211 Park Ave. SW, Aiken, SC. Memorial donations should be directed to Hitchcock Hospice 690 Medical Park Dr. Aiken, SC 29801. Mr. Griswold, 78, of Aiken, died Wednesday October 15th at his residence, under the care of Hitchcock Hospice. A son of the late Lewis and Winifred McCarthy Griswold, he was born in New York City and had lived in Sudbury, MA, Portsmouth RI and then Hilton Head Island, SC before moving to Aiken three years ago. He was a retired laboratory engineering manager with the Raytheon Equipment Division, Sudbury, MA. He served in the United States Navy during W.W. II. Mr. Griswold was active in the Hilton Head Chapter of Senior Corps of Retired Executives SCORE and while living in Portsmouth, was the Former Chairman of the New Visions program, former chairman of the School Committee and City Council member. He was a communicant of St. Mary Help of Christians Church in Aiken. He was predeceased by a brother, Lewis. Mr. Griswold is survived by his wife, Julia Yacone Griswold, Aiken, two sons; John H. Griswold, Jr., Cambridge, MA and Scott Griswold, Hilton Head Island, SC, four daughters; Gayle Goldberg, Harrisburg, PA, Alison Wiebe, Decatur, GA, Marybeth Fraser, Arlington, VA and Ellen Kish, San Jose, CA. He is also survived by ten grand children.
