Funeral services for Mr. John Odell Pearson will be held on Wednesday, February 18, 2009 at 2pm at George Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 211 Park Ave. SW Aiken. Entombment, with military honors will follow at Southlawn Cemetery & Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 1pm until the time of the service. Memorial donations may be directed to Palmetto Hook A Kid On Golf, 275 Berrie Rd. Aiken, SC 29801.
Mr. Pearson, 96, of Aiken, died Saturday, February 14, 2009 at his residence.
A son of the late Walter Gray Pearson and Tessie Loftis Pearson, he was born in Greenville County, SC and had lived in Columbia, SC before moving to Aiken in 1946. He served in the US Army during WW II and was awarded a Silver, Service Star and was honorably discharged as a Staff Sgt. Before retiring in the late 1970's with 33 years of service, he worked as a textile engraver at United Merchants, Clearwater, SC. John was most known however, as an avid golfer and record holder at the Palmetto Golf Club, Aiken.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of seventy years, Jeanette Lawson Pearson, who died in 2007.
He is survived by three sisters; Janet Schwing, Rock Hill, SC, Katherine Ashmore, Piedmont, SC and Peggy Griffin, Ft. Walton Beach, FL. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, including area residents; Odell Ashmore, Spartanburg, SC, Benjamin Lawson and Milton Lawson, Appling, GA.
