Memorial Services for Mr. Charles "Charlie" Mettlen, will be held on 10:00 am Friday, April 24, 2015, at the First Presbyterian Church, under the care of GEORGE FUNERAL HOME. The family will receive friends following the service. Mr. Mettlen, 85, passed away on Monday, April 20, 2015 at the Veteran Victory House. Born in Muncie, Indiana, he was a son of the late Charles and Nina Vernon Mettlen. Mr. Mettlen was raised in Tipton and later Frankfort, Indiana. He graduated from Purdue University with a degree in Metallurgical Engineering in 1951 and began his career working for Inland Steel in East Chicago. In 1952, Mr. Mettlen began his 2 years of active duty in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. Following an honorable discharge in 1954, he began working for E.I. DuPont at the Savannah River Plant in the Savannah River Laboratory. In 1955, he married Gwen D. Mettlen and the young couple settled in Aiken. Three children were born, Andrew, Sarah and Timothy. Mr. Mettlen later transferred to the Raw Material Department, where he later became Manager. He retired from DuPont in 1989 after 34 years of service, but continued to work for Westinghouse for 2 more years. Charlie was a member of First Presbyterian Church and for many years he helped coach Dixie Youth Baseball. He was co-chairman and later chairman of the Savannah River Plant United Way. While with the United Way he served on the member planning & evaluation committee. He was also past chairman of the American Society for Metals. He was an active participant in his children's lives, supporting their many activities. In later years he enjoyed participating in the USCA program allowing senior citizens to take university classes. He especially enjoyed the history courses. Mr. Mettlen was also an avid duck hunter and supported the conservation efforts of Ducks Unlimited. He enjoyed vacations at Edisto Island where he loved fishing for flounder at Jeremy's Inlet. Survivors include his loving wife, Gwen Mettlen of Aiken; sons, Andy Mettlen (Patty) of Pittsburgh, PA and Tim Mettlen (Angie) of Pawleys Island; a daughter, Sarah Mettlen of Beaufort; a grandson, Michael Mettlen of Pittsburgh; a granddaughter, Holly Mettlen of Pawleys Island and sister Mary Jane Christopher of Terre Haute, Indiana. The family wishes to express their appreciation to the staff of Veterans Victory House in Walterboro, SC for the care and support he received.
