I grew up knowing Mr Mudge as the "real" Santa. My father befriended him at Santa's Land and we kept in touch for many years until he passed. The first time I met him, I was carrying a stuffed dalmatian toy and he correctly guessed it's name. At the time it seemed impossible that anyone but the real Santa would know that. I was an immediate convert. Who wouldn't be charmed by him? He would call us on Christmas and say "you're sweeter than peanuts and cracker jacks" and I'll never forget his soft, warm voice as he said that. Even as i got older and didn't believe in fantasy anymore, he really kept the magic alive and I had to make an exception for him. The love he gave us through those simple acts of kindness left a profound mark on my childhood and every Christmas I still expect the phone to ring and hear his smiling voice.

I learned of Mr. Mudge's passing when I saw the newspaper article. Reading it I learned that this was the sweet Santa that I met year's ago when I worked at the Augusta airport. He was flying out to go to a Santa job. He was such a nice man and we got to talking. He seemed like a man who never met a stranger. I told him how much he looked like Santa and he told me he was and proceeded to tell me his story. At the time I had started writing personalized Santa letters for kids and I told him about it. He said " Well, you need help from Santa then." He put his briefcase up on the counter and proceeded to take out a stack of pictures that had been taken of him at a photography studio. To my surprise he gave them to me. He told me to put them in with my letters. I have been doing that ever since. Since I only write a few each year the pictures he gave me have lasted awhile. I wish that I knew that he lived so close. I would have loved to tell him how the kids each year are so thrilled to get their own picture from Santa. Also, I would have liked to thank him again for such a wonderful gift of those pictures.
My condolences and prayers go out to his family and friends.

To Charlie's family,
Though I never met your parents in person, I am filled with fond and happy memories of them. My parents shared many stories and photos of them through the years - always with love and laughter. "Santa's" photo still adorns my mom's refrigerator
and always will, I am sure.
The letter your dad wrote for my dad's memorial service was beautiful and funny beyond words- an absolute gift to us all.
I'm sure the laughter continues as they are together once again.
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your families.
Fondly,
Susan Weinbach Colinet

Fondest memories of my Dad include the funny sayings he enjoyed blurting out in public to Mom's dismay. "You warm the cockles of my heart; you're better than popcorn, peanuts and cracker jacks; I either will or I won't" and the most popular of his for many years, "Wet birds never fly at night." Well, Dad, your wings must have been dry the night you flew away from us we'll miss you. Your Eldest, Fran

I had the honor and pleasure of working with "Santa Charlie" for many years at Woodbridge Center. He was so loved and I can't tell you how many people would say he was "the real Santa". I will always remember how he sang "Happy Birthday" to Baby Jesus - every Christmas with my daughter as she was growing up. He was so special to me, my family and our community. Heaven is a happier place with our Santa Charlie. God Bless!

I was truly blessed by Mr. Charlie. I worked in Hobby Lobby as the jewlery department manager. He would come in for our sales and I would help him to pick out the beads he needed. What he did with the beads was such a blessing! He made rosaries for people who needed them or wanted them. He spent his time making them for people who needed a special blessing. It is unsure how many he made and gave away but each was as unique as he was. God truly blessed me the day i met him, I thought he was an angel and continue to think so today. May God bless his family. You will never know how many lives your father touched each day. He will surely be missed by all.

The first time we met Charlie was in Gainesville at Lakeshore Mall. Our little girl was there to see Santa, like most of the children in the mall at Christmas time. Little did we know at that moment we were introducing her to one of the most positive influences in her life. As she sat on his knee and looked into his sparkling eyes you could see the love grow. He didnâ??t do just the usual Santa thing, he spoke to her of the reason for Christmas and what being good really meant. Over the years, as we grew to know Santa Charlie, we realized he was the wisest of wise men, a true angle, minister, a man of God ,and the full meaning of an American Hero. We so looked forward to the special occasions to get to see and speak with him, to experience the magic and share the love. We visited with Santa Charlie and Catherine at their home {Santaâ??s Workshop} in Blairsville a few times. We spoke to him by phone several times a year. Sadly our last conversation was this past Christmas. Our greatest Christmas gift will always be in knowing Santa Charlie and Catherine.
â??We will always love You!â?

I don't know that there are any words on this earth to describe the kind of man Santa Charlie was. He could bring a smile and childhood excitement to anyone . Even my grandmother when she was alive looked forward to seeing Santa at my graduations. I have known Santa my entire life. As long as I can remember he was my Santa. I remember our talks of the real meaning of Christmas as I sat on his knee. Even after I grew up he continued to make my Christmas with his calls. He traveled to Georgia for my high school and college graduations, and he visited with me in Florida just this past year. He was and is the only true Santa Claus this world will ever have. Everywhere he went there was no mistaking who he was. He truly embodied the kind of love, generosity and selfless giving that I can only pray everyone can experience at least once in their life. I wish I could be more like him. He brought joy everywhere he went with everyone he met. I can't begin to say how much he will be missed. I love him so very much. Thank you Santa Charlie for the smile's laughs and everything you taught me. I love you.
Love always,

We were pleased to see Charlie at Mass on many occasions and always saw him take the time to reach down and hug or talk to a child. He once greeted me because I was wearing a Marine Corps shirt, but he never indicated that he was also a Marine. He appeared to be a very humble man and almost an icon in Aiken. From the members of the local Marine Corps League detachment, and myself in particular, we wish Charlie "fair winds and following seas." To the family, we Marines offer you our heartfelt respect and deepest sympathies. Semper Fidelis.

My husband, Keith, used to work at Aiken Brewing Co. He would come home saying that Santa came in to eat today. He thought a lot of Charlie, but I was yet to meet him. Then he came as Santa to a Christmas party for Aiken Mental Health Association. I own a residential care home and had my residents there. When I looked up and saw him, I was a kid again and in total awe. It felt like I was truly seeing Santa. My fascination with this man has never diminished. We now own a restaurant in Clearwater. He came in one day. We've had a lot of well-known people there. But I think I was the most excited that "Santa" was eating in my restaurant! I've only met him 2 or 3 times, but the loss I feel today is great. My husband and I will truly miss this man with the twinkling eyes, the gentle smile and that wonderful laugh. The world was truly a better place with Charlie Mudge in it.

I remember Charlie delighting children in Medjugorje, Bosnia about 12 years ago. The little children approached him calling him St. Nicholas while we ate at a local restaurant. I continue to tell this story because of the impact that Charlie had on being one of God's creatures on earth. He symbolized one of God's helpers on earth. I thank him for that!
