AIKEN, SC- A Requiem Mass for Edward Philips Comar will be celebrated on Monday, December 21, at 12 noon at the old St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church, Park Ave. Internment will follow at Calvary Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday evening, 4-6 PM at George Funeral Home, 211 Park Ave., SW, Aiken, SC. Mr. Comar died peacefully at home on Friday, December 18. The son of the late Isabel McDonald and William J. Comar, he and his twin brother were born during an unscheduled train stop at Staunton, Va. as his mother was en route to join his father in White Sulphur Springs, W. Va. He grew up primarily in Charleston, S.C. where he attended St. Patrick's Catholic School and Bishop England High School, where he was elected class president. During the Great Depression, he lived for several years at the Catholic Orphan House. His only disappointment to the nuns who taught him was that he did not become a priest as they had hoped. Mr. Comar enlisted in the Navy at 17, serving as a parachute rigger in North Africa, the Azores and other Atlantic Ocean stations during WWII and again in the Korean conflict. He attended The Citadel in Charleston and Bowling Green College of Commerce at Bowling Green, KY, where he was elected President of the Phi Beta Kappa Honorary Accounting Fraternity in his senior year. He was working for the State of SC as an income tax agent when he met and married the love of his life, the former Gene Marion Worley. He also worked for the US Department of Treasury, the Charleston Naval Shipyard and finally the Atomic Energy Commission at the Savannah River Plant, where he was contract auditor. He retired in 1980 with approximately 34 years of federal service. He and Gene were married for 60 happy years before her death in 2013. Together they raised five children with loving hearts and firm hands. They spent many happy years in family enterprises, boating and camping in the mountains and beaches throughout South Carolina, he was an avid tennis player, attended the recitals and competitions of their five children, served and helped organize fundraisers for St. Mary's Help of Christians Catholic School, and was active with the Knights of Columbus Council #3684, where Mr. Comar achieved the rank of 4th Degree Knight. He was also a longtime volunteer at ACTS. He loved his family, cherished his Catholic religion, and lived an honorable life, looked up to and respected by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. He was especially grateful for the ability to maintain his independence to the end of his days. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his loving wife Gene, sisters Isabel and Virginia, and twin brother William. He is survived by four daughters and a son, Barbara Brothers (Mike) of Columbia, Mary Harvey (Jim Fralix) of Charleston, Carol Dennis (David) of Spartanburg, Edward W. "Ned" Comar (Donna) of Pleasant Hill, CA, and Amy Turner (Todd) of Aiken, SC. He is also survived by a sister, Anne Willis, and sister-in-law Dot Comar, both of Mt. Pleasant. He leaves twelve grandchildren to cherish his memory: Tom, Katie and Jim Harvey, Claire, Brooke and Grey Jarvis, Brandon and Drew Dennis, Phillip and Kyle Hattaway, and Benjamin and Nathaniel Comar.
