Funeral services for Elsie L. (Chapman) Greene will take place on Saturday, December 21, 2013 at 11:00am at the chapel of George Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 211 Park Ave. SW Aiken, SC. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Friday evening, December 20, 2013 from 6-8pm. Burial will be private. Mrs. Greene, 87, of Aiken, died Friday, December 13, 2013 at Aiken Regional Medical Centers. A daughter of the late Cecil Ray and Elva (Slaughter) Chapman was born on May 24, 1926, in Gassaway, WV. She was married August 7, 1947 in Silver Spring, MD, lived in Pittsburgh, PA, and Horsham, PA (a suburb of Philadelphia), before moving to Aiken to retire in 1990. In addition to her parents, she was pre-deceased by her loving husband of 60 years; H.F. "Bob" Greene with whom she actually shared the same birthdate; brothers Calvin and wife (Barba Jean) Chapman and Kenneth Eugene Chapman; nieces Beth and Laura Reed and nephew Ray Chapman. As a member of the greatest generation, Elsie helped America's effort during World War II as a riveter in an aircraft plant. After the war, she married her husband, settled down and began raising her family. She was a member of Covenant Community Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh, PA where she served in various women's groups planning spaghetti dinners, strawberry festivals and fundraisers. After moving to Horsham, PA, Elsie was a member of Supplee Memorial United Presbyterian Church, Maple Glen, PA. She enjoyed all of the social aspects of the neighborhoods she lived in, and looked forward to the fellowship like bowling leagues, volleyball games, picnics, morning coffee and pinochle. She so loved trips to the mountains, travelling on business with her husband, cruises and vacations. Elsie had a big heart and was such a kind soul to everyone. If you were lucky enough to receive one of her famous loaves of banana nut bread, you were considered very special in her mind. She always put her family first. She shared an avid interest in the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates with her son Jim. She was always thinking about ways to contribute to Nancy's special needs students and their classroom. It was a special treat for Janet's sports teams, both as a player and a coach, to receive one of her chocolate chip cakes, that she sent all over the United States. Elsie's unique blend of humor, wisdom and perspective has been handed down to each of her children. The love for her husband and children was unmatched. She is survived by her son; James E. Greene, Pittsburgh, PA, her two daughters; Nancy J. (Glenn) Vanderwende, Dover, DE and Janet L. Greene, Aiken, SC, two brothers; Donald (Bessie) Chapman, Gassaway, WV and Robert (Jack) (Bridgett) Chapman, Glenville, WV; her sister Anna Blair (Richard) Reed, Clarksburg, WV; a sister-in-law, Carole A. Martin, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, and several nephews and nieces. As sad as we are, we love you Mom and are happy you are no longer suffering. You were a tremendous fighter and inspiration to all of us. We realize you are back with your best friend again as you will be spending Christmas with Dad. Your family will miss you dearly. The family would like to thank the entire ICU staff at ARMC for their kindness and compassion. Both daughters have severe allergies to live floral arrangements. Silk flowers may be accepted as an alternative or a memorial donation to American Diabetes Association - SC Chapter Aiken, SC ; Attn: Christina Bickley, 107 W Park Blvd, Suite 220, Columbia, SC 29210.
