Obituary of Elizabeth Claire Davis Royal

AIKEN, SC – Elizabeth Claire Davis Royal, age 85, passed away May 14, 2024.

Betty, as she was affectionately known, was born August 12, 1938, in Gracewood, GA to the late Marvin and Evelyn Tucker Davis. Betty lived altogether in the Aiken, SC for about 45 years and Charleston for 12 years. She was extremely creative and was an excellent seamstress. She made numerous christening gowns, dolls, and small sculptures. Betty was Chair of the Aiken County Democratic Party in the mid 1970’s and attended the Electoral College after Jimmy Carter won the presidency. She served as a delegate and attended NATO meetings in Brussels. She was a docent for the Edmonston Alston House in Charleston, SC and was active in estate sales. Betty collected and sold antiques and was an amateur photographer. She was involved in fundraising to get the library moved from the small library on Laurens Street to Banksia.

Survivors include two daughters, Margaret Giddens Cline (Michael) and Cathryn Watson; two grandchildren, Perry Watson and Clay Watson; a sister, Barbara Davis Turner; and a niece, Blythe Nichols.

Services will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the SPCA Thrift Store, 1589 Whiskey Rd., Aiken, SC 29803.
