Mary Ann Joseph, age 90, passed away peacefully March 18, 2024, on Daniel Island, SC. Born May 24, 1933, in Joliet, Illinois to the late Margaret Karpel and the late John Karpel, Mary Ann lived in Joliet and married her beloved husband of 60 years, the late Charles Joseph. The couple, along with their four children, lived in Meriden, CT, for 18 years and moved to Aiken, SC in 1974, where they made their home for 46 years.
Mary Ann worked in the insurance industry in Chicago in the early 1950’s. and had a successful career as an insurance agent with Hutson-Etherredge Companies in downtown Aiken for close to thirty years.
She was a devout Catholic and an active member of St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Parish.
Mary Ann made friends wherever she went. She was an avid reader, loved history, playing bridge, and solving the New York Times crossword puzzle. She enjoyed travelling with her sisters and Aiken friends, taking cruises, and visiting Las Vegas. She was known for her exquisite baking and cooking talents, outgoing personality, and sharp sense of humor.
Mary Ann was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Joseph, her brothers, Joseph Karpel, John Karpel, Richard Karpel, Robert Karpel, her sisters, Margaret Karpel Janostak, Genevieve Karpel Hommes, Agnes Karpel McLaren, Anna Karpel Schoeneck, Dorothy Karpel Witherspoon, and granddaughter Emily Joseph.
She is survived by her four children, Charles Joseph (Mona), Margaret Joseph, Jane Joseph, Kathryn Joseph (Steven Whitehorn), granddaughter Dayle Joseph, sister Elizabeth Karpel Milligan, and sister-in-law Rita Karpel.
The Reqiuem Mass will be celebrated May 28,2024, at 11am at old St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church, Park, Ave., Aiken, SC. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
