Dear Phoebe, family and friends of Al,
On behalf of the United States Submarine Veterans, we offer our sincere condolences at Al´s passing. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. We are always saddened whenever a fellow "Bubblehead" departs on Eternal Patrol. He served with honor on the USS Henry Clay SSBN-625, USS Pargo SSN-650, USS Lewis and Clark SSBN-644, USS John C Calhoun SSBN-630, and as Commanding Officer of USS Shark SSN-591 and USS San Francisco SSN-711.
To our "Brother-of-the-Phin" we say, "Sailor, rest your oar. We have the watch. Fair Winds and Following Seas." Thank you for your service to our country.
Phoebe and family... "may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you." 2 Thessalonians 3:16 (ESV).

Remembering our days in Admiral Rickover's Prospective Commanding Officers charm school, when Al Marshall was the most upbeat member of our class. Always in good humor and supportive of others. He made everybody around him feel good.
Sandie and my condolences to Phoebe and the rest of the Marshall family.

As a classmate and submariner with Al, I always enjoyed the camaraderie and competition. He was always joyful, but could be serious when required. The only rub I ever had is when he stole my XO during new construction. Always enjoyed our interactions both professionally and socially. I am sure he is resting his oars. May God’s arms reach out to his family.

Captain Marshall,
I was new to submarines when I reported to USS San Francisco shortly after commissioning. It can be a pretty daunting world to a 21-year-old. The thing that I saw that made me realize I’d joined the coolest profession in the world was during a swim call in the Caribbean on our way to Pearl Harbor. You were standing on the bow in your swim trunks and flip flops. You thought the bow was a little too high out of the water for us to easily get back onto the boat after swimming. You yelled up to the bridge to have them open the forward ballast tank vents until you told them to stop. The vents popped open, the bow began to lower, you gave the thumbs up, the vents went shut then you said, “let’s go swimming.” That was pretty cool.
Rest in peace captain.
