Obituary of James William Jones

James Williams Jones, Jr. PhD, 76, beloved husband of Norma Elizabeth Burns Jones, passed away suddenly at his residence in the early morning hours of Monday, September 18, 2023.

Born in Travelers Rest, SC on September 2, 1947, he was the son of the late James William and Margaret Thalia Batson Jones, Sr. Jimmy was a 1965 graduate of Travelers Rest High School. He earned his bachelor’s degree in science from Clemson University and went on to earn his PhD in Engineering from Clemson University in 1973. Jimmy was a retired project manager with Duke Energy having worked with them for 25 years. He was a member of Clearview Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Travelers Rest Historical Society and Vice-President of the Board of Director for Wyndham Resort Ocean Blvd, North Myrtle Beach. He was a train enthusiast who traveled to numerous cities and states in research of trains and their history.

In addition to his wife of 53 years he is survived by a daughter, Emily Elizabeth Jones of Travelers Rest; a brother and sister-in-law, Rudy and Doris Jones of Greenville, a brother-in-law and sister-in law, John B. “Skipper” and Debbie Burns, Jr. of Travelers Rest and granddogs, Precious & Weezer.

Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, September 21, 2023 at 2:00pm. at Clearview Baptist Church with the Rev. Michael Welch and Rev. Jim Cashwell officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Memorial Park, 7 Duncan Road, Travelers Rest, SC 29690.

The family will receive friends from 12:30pm until 2:00p.m. at the church.
