Obituary of Betty Joan Griffin

Please share a memory of Betty to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Our family is deeply saddened by the passing of our 96-year-old mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, Mrs. Betty Joan Griffin. She passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on Monday morning, August 28, 2023, following a period of declining health.

Betty was born in Jackson, Michigan on November 22, 1926. She was a daughter of the late Wesley and Oletha Boyer Billings. Betty worked as an accounting assistant in the banking industry for many years in Brooklyn, Michigan and later worked as an executive assistant at Patrick Oil Company in Jackson, Michigan. She and her late husband, Mr. Gilbert J. Griffin, lived in Michigan, Florida, and finally South Carolina during their 65 years of marriage. When they retired, they traveled to numerous places, most notably to Hawaii, and they eventually moved from Michigan to Springhill, FL, where they enjoyed playing golf together and with friends. Betty and Gilbert moved to Aiken, SC in 2000, and they gave back to their community by volunteering at Aiken Regional Hospital. Betty lived a full and wonderful life and loved her family unconditionally. In addition to spending time with her family, her passions included vacationing in Edisto Beach, watching crime TV, loving her pets (Bo, Paulie and Lily), a good thick steak, and an occasional glass of spirits. Her sense of humor and sharp wit always kept her family on their toes.

Family members surviving her include her son Michael (Julie) Griffin of Aiken, daughter-in-law Patricia Prough of Omaha, granddaughters Leslie (Nicholas) Spicer of Aiken and Kelly (John) Stuckey of Omaha, NE, grandson Travis (Kara) Griffin of Aiken, step-grandsons James (Misha) Friday of Concord, NC and Jackson Friday of Aiken, great-grandchildren Katy Stuckey and Bo Stuckey of Omaha, NE, Lucas Spicer, Hannah Spicer, Owen Griffin, Annie Rae Griffin all of Aiken, and Tanner Friday of Concord, NC, nieces Susan Vogt and Carol Geiske of Michigan, nephews Eddie (Linda) Geiske and Ned (Kim) Geiske of Michigan.

In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband Gilbert J. Griffin, her son David Lynn Prough, her brothers William and Wesley Billings, and her sister Myrtle Geiske.

Private inurnment services will take place in Southlawn Cemetery & Mausoleum.
