Mr. Kupcha was a wonderful teach, and a great coach. I was fortunate to know him over 3 years in high school. As a coach of JV soccer at JP Stevens he made me a better player. I was once so frustrated over playing time that I tried to quit the team, but he wouldn't let me and pushed me to try harder. When anyone on the team lost focus, he'd penalize us with BURMA exercises. To this day I still never learned what that word means. I'll never forget how he would always address me as I addressed him. If I said "Coach Kupcha", he'd respond with "Athlete Lanza".
He was a great teacher of Chemistry as well. I hated the subject, but Mr. Kupcha made it enjoyable. I held on to his "Holy Sheet" reference paper for years. But the best memory was when built the "Chemist-Tree" for Christmas, brought out a lounge chair, and read "T'was the night before Christmas" to the class. He had a great way of making you feel welcome and cared about.
For time to time I noticed that Mr. Kupcha would wear a tie that had Sherlock Holmes on it, and after talking with him, found out he was a huge fan. This was in 1998 when Holmes was not a popular character like he is today. As the newer movies and tv shows about Sherlock Holmes continued to come out I would often wonder what Mr. Kupcha thought about them. Was he a traditionalist that disliked the new shows, or did he just enjoy that there was new content to watch?
Well despite saying goodbye when I graduated in 1998, it looks like memories of you stayed with me for much longer. Thank you Coach Kupcha.

My heart is heavy as I hear the news of one of my most memorable and influential teachers from high school… After a 2 year hiatus from my designated high school, not many teachers were welcoming upon my return… Only 2… Mr. Kupcha was 1 of the 2… I’d later go on after graduation to become an educator myself… He was a great example of providing a welcoming, non judgmental, supportive approach within education which would later become my philosophy… His legacy will most definitely live on through me… Rest in Heaven Mr. Kupcha! You are one of the greatest!
Extended prayers to family.

So sorry to hear of Joe's passing. He was a gentle soul who, through his caring for and encouragement of his students, brought out the best in them. He always gave his full energies devoting himself to good causes and he made a positive contribution in so many areas of his life. The world is a better place due to his time wherever he was. He is missed.

I first met Joe in kindergarten. We became fast friends and got into a lot of mischief together. We were almost inseparable after school and on weekends. He was so much fun to hang out with. We went to separate junior highs but reconnected in high school, again getting into mischief but nothing serious. I lost contact with him until he and Chris retired. I felt so blessed again to have him in my life. Joe was so unique. He was loving, giving, caring, and kind. His sense of adventure from our childhood parlayed into his desire to travel the world, and travel they did. I always loved hearing his stories when they returned home. The world needs more of people like him. Rest in Peace, Joey. I will miss you. God bless you Chris.
Your old pal,
Bobby Losyk
