Obituary of Noel Riedinger Johnson
Noel Riedinger Johnson, 80, of Aiken, passed away on July 29, 2023 after battling Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP). She is survived by her husband Daniel, his two children, and her brother Theodore Albert Riedinger. She is preceded in death by her parents Ruth and Albert Riedinger.
Born in Schenectady, NY, Noel spent time in the Adirondack mountains — canoeing, hiking, sailing, and swimming. She graduated from Skidmore College with a BS in Studio Arts and became the assistant riding instructor at the college stables, teaching riding at the college for 2 years after graduation.
Growing up in her parents’ advertising/PR firm, Noel later managed the business. After that she worked as a communications specialist for General Electric, where she met her husband Daniel. At GE, she developed a strong interest in photography and filming. With her passion for conservation, Noel wrote and edited the award-winning documentary film “The Adirondack: The Land Nobody Knows”. She edited 4 books published by Syracuse University Press, one of which, Adirondack Portraits: A Piece of Time, a collection of poems by Jeanne Robert Foster, is currently in its second printing. She served as a director of the Adirondack Research Center and the NY State Forest Preserve Centennial Planning Committee.
After her marriage to Dan, they moved to Virginia where her interests returned to horses. There she instructed, hunted and evented. In Virginia, Noel and Dan joined the Baha'i Faith. For many years Noel tutored Ruhi courses and trained new tutors.
Retirement brought the couple to Aiken in 2001, drawn by the city’s charm, horses and Hitchcock Woods. Her camera became her companion as she explored a new landscape, capturing the natural beauty of South Carolina.
