Obituary of Dirk Spaans
AIKEN, SC – Dirk Spanns passed away at home peacefully on Monday, March 13, 2023, at the age of 99.
Dirk was born November 10, 1923, in the Netherlands. From the early age of 13 he became a fisherman, and later a ship welder in Holland. He immigrated to the United States in 1957. He spent his entire working career with International Paper Company. He was a resident of New Jersey from 1958 until 2014. He had made the Cedar Creek community of Aiken, SC his home for the past nine years. Dirk was a member of The First Reformed of Boonton Church and later the Lafayette Federated Church in NJ. He was an avid gardener and had a love for flowers. He enjoyed being outside and owned a miniature farm. He loved nature, tinkering and building things.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Brechtje Spaans.
Survivors include his daughter, Cornelia McCorkle (John), Aiken, SC; two grandchildren, Shawn McCorkle (Michelle Cohen) and Timothy McCorkle (Kelly Cafone); and five great-grandchildren, Brodie, Ryder, Daisy, Miley, and Toby.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, March 20, 2023, in the Chapel of Millbrook Baptist Church, 223 South Aiken Blvd. SE, Aiken, SC 29803, with Pastors Bill Howard and Dexter Lambert officiating. The Millbrook Chapel is the small white building adjacent to the main sanctuary.
