Obituary of Irene Mary Nicks Jewett
Irene Mary Nicks Jewett, 92, passed into eternal life on January 25, 2023 at her home in Aiken, SC. Irene was born in Dubuque, Iowa on June 25, 1930 to Gus and Lena Nicks, who preceded her in death. Two sisters, Anna Oulman and Rosemary Acuff, as well as three brothers, John Nicks, and Andy and Nick Grevas are also deceased.
She married Wayne M. Jewett in 1949 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church and they moved to Maryland two years later after he was employed by the Naval Research Laboratory. They had five children whom she taught by example and love to be industrious and happy. They followed her love for flower gardens and continue to add nature’s beauty to the world wherever they live. After their children were all in school, Irene worked as a pharmacy assistant and quickly became adept in that field.
From the time Irene graduated from St. Mary’s School, she followed their teachings on faith, compassion and charity. She always responded to pleas for help and for years sponsored a young lady in Honduras through The Christian Foundation for Children and Aging. She praised God through her ardent capacity to work hard and truly care for all that He gave her, especially her beloved spouse of 71 years who passed into eternal life on November 19, 2020. Wayne testified to her goodness by calling her his earth angel. She was a member of Saint Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church in Aiken.
Irene leaves five children to mourn her passing and give thanks for the blessing of her life as their mother — their listener, teacher, peacemaker, counselor and friend: Barbara (David) Warren of Fleming Island FL, Susan (William) Garner of Aiken SC, Lawrence (Brenda) Jewett also of Aiken, David (Traci) Jewett of Richmond VA, and Steven (Terri) Jewett of Dumfries VA as well as 11 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Lucille Koppes of Dubuque IA.
We commend you Irene to your Creator. May you rest in the arms of Our Lord who formed you from the dust of the earth. May Holy Mary, the angels and all the saints welcome you now that you have gone forth from this life. You are already missed but will never be forgotten. We love you.
