Obituary of Mildred Williford Akins

NEW ELLENTON, SC – Mildred Williford Akins, age 93, passed away peacefully at home on October 29, 2022.

Mrs. Akins was born April 23, 1929, in Ogeechee, Ga to the late Brooks and Myrtle Williford. She had made the area here home since 1952 when the family moved here to support the Savannah River Plant. In 1952 she became a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church where she was a Sunday School teacher, member of the Joy Circle, United Methodist Women, and the church choir. Her strongest passion was for her family, especially her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Lavearn Akins; a great-grandson, Christian Hall; two brothers, R.V. Williford and Ray Williford; and a sister, Ollie Ruth Deal.

Survivors include a son, Larry Akins, New Ellenton, SC; three daughters, Ann Akins, Aiken, SC, Kay Fuller (Pete), Fernandina Beach, FL; and Gail Ferguson (Herb), Fernandina Beach, FL; ten grandchildren, Christy Fuller (Tammy), Barry Fuller (Angel), Jennifer Montgomery (Brad), Amanda Kirkland (Michael), Dylan Akins (Jennifer), Jennifer Perry, Wendy Temple, Herbie Ferguson (Angela), Austin Akins (Stephanie), Zack Temple (Amber); eleven great-grandchildren; a brother, Ralph Williford (Lora); and a sister, Gladys Marks.

The family will receive friends beginning at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 1, 2022, at St. Paul United Methodist Church, New Ellenton. The funeral will follow at 2:00 p.m. in the church sanctuary with The Rev. Joseph Kovas officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Zack Temple, Michael Weaver, Brad Montgomery, Austin Akins, Dylan Akins, Barry Fuller, Herbie Ferguson, and Michael Kirkland.  

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the St. Paul United Methodist Church Family Life Center Fund, 600 Main St, New Ellenton, SC 29809.
