Obituary of Don R. Morton

Please share a memory of Don to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Don R. Morton, 78 of Charleston and Liberty, SC, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 12, 2022, at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, where he had received exceptional care. Amongst his family and loved ones, he died the way he lived: bravely, gently, and with concern for others. He is survived by his beloved wife, Ann S. Morton of nearly 54 years, a retired nurse; one daughter, Dr. Cheryl A. Garrison and her husband, Lt. Col. Donnie R. Garrison, and their sons, Bolt and Bryant Garrison, of Six Mile. He is also survived by his brother, Wendell Morton of Greenville, a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Jane and Steve Ergle of Aiken, as well as his loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Don was born in Greenville, SC, on June 16, 1944, of the late Hillard L. and Verdie B. Morton. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Curtis and Arlion Morton.

Mr. Morton was a 1962 graduate of Berea High School and 1970 graduate of North Greenville College where he earned his Associate Degree in Science and then went on to attend Furman University. Don was a proud United States Air Force veteran achieving the rank of E-4 during the Vietnam Era. He was President and Founder of Happy Tots Inc. from 1984 until 1992. In addition, he was the Consumer Credit Manager for Belk Simpson from 1973 until 1985. After retiring, he returned to work part-time for National Management Inc., where he managed industrial contracts at a variety of college campuses. Don was also the founder and former President of the South Carolina Childcare Association, former treasurer of the National Childcare Association, a member of the Society of Certified Consumer Credit Executives and a member of the International Consumer Credit Association.

Most importantly, Don was a child of God and loving husband, daddy, grandfather, uncle, and friend. He will be remembered by his family as patient, soft-spoken, and hardworking. His quietly infectious humor and love of people helped him make friends everywhere he went!

At the time of his death, he was a member of Flat Rock Baptist Church in Liberty, SC.
