Mr. Claude Martin "Tater Pie" Redd, Sr, 93, passed away Monday, January 29, 2007 at his home.
The funeral service will be conducted Thursday at 10AM at the 18th green of the Aiken Golf Club. Burial will be private in Westover Memorial Park in Augusta, GA. George Funeral Home & Cremation Center 211 Park Ave. SW Aiken is assisting the family.
Mr. Redd was a native and longtime resident of Aiken. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and for many years worked as a sales representative for John J. Miller Company in Augusta, GA. An enthusiastic and avid golfer, Mr. Redd routinely shot his age and enjoyed playing golf as many as six days each week following retirement. He was the oldest living member and only lifetime honorary member of the Aiken Golf Club formally The Highland Park Country Club. In recent years, a golf tournament has been held annually in his honor. Additionally, the eighteenth hole is fondly known as " Tater's Alley" coined after his nickname of "Tater Pie". Since 2005, he and his wife have made their home in Winterville, NC to be near his son. A loving husband and father, he befriended many people during his lifetime and will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.
He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Valerie Brown Redd, of Winterville, NC; a son, C. Martin Redd, Jr. and wife, Kay, of Winterville, NC; grandson, C. Martin Redd, III and wife, Tina, of Overland Park, KS; and 2 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service at Aiken Golf Club, 18th green.
