Obituary of Kathleen Rosemary Iwert

Please share a memory of Kathleen to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Kathleen "Kathy" Rosemary Iwert (Kovacs), 70, succumbed to cancer after a long-fought battle. She was in the comfort of her home when she passed on May 12, 2021.

Kathy was born in Elyria, Ohio on December 8, 1950, daughter of the late John Michael Kovacs and Velma Ann Kovacs. She moved to Aiken, South Carolina in 1983, the place she considered home. She was a member of St. Mary's Help of Christians Catholic Church and was active in charity work with mid-day Lions Club and the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. She enjoyed her many friends, cross-stitching, celebrating her grandkids, and her time as a recreational hot air balloon pilot. She was retired from GlaxoSmithKline.

Kathy is survived by her two sons, William Andrew Mitrik III of Greer, SC and John (Michelle) Mitrik of Knoxville, TN; and four grandchildren, Alexander Garrett Waugh, William Andrew Mitrik IV, Havana Elizabeth Mitrik, and Hazel Ann Mitrik.

Many thanks go to Joe Zimmerman for his generosity in her care, Ellen Heim for her guidance, and her beloved dog, Zelda, for her companionship.

A Requiem Mass will be celebrated on Monday, May 17, at 11:00 AM at Saint Mary Help of Christians Church on Fairfield Street, followed by a small reception in Mother Teresa Hall.

Memorials can be made to the Lions Vision Services of South Carolina or St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church.

The Historic George Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 211 Park Ave., SW, Aiken, SC 29801 (803.649.6234), has charge of arrangements.
