Dear Laura, family and friends of Frank’s,
On behalf of the United States Submarine Veterans, we offer our sincere condolences at Frank’s passing. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. We are always saddened whenever a fellow “Bubblehead” leaves on Eternal Patrol. He served with honor on the USS Lewis and Clark SSBN-644, USS Lapon SSN-661, USS Woodrow Wilson SSBN/SSN-624, USS George Bancroft SSBN-643 and USS L. Mendel Rivers SSN-686. To our “Brother-of-the-Phin” we say, “Sailor, rest your oar. We have the watch. Fair Winds and Following Seas.” Thank you for your service to our country.
Laura… “may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you.” 2 Thessalonians 3:16 (ESV).
Jim Sandman, FTC(SS) Ret.
National Chaplain USSVI.

I served with Frank Jordan for four patrols aboard USS GEORGE BANCROFT (SSBN-643) (BLUE) from 1976-1978. As the ship’s Executive Officer (XO), he was the consummate professional—firm, fair, patient, knowledgeable, and totally committed to both the men and the mission. When the crew voted for the XO to spend a shift working as a lowly mess cook (part of a halfway night fund raiser for the ship’s Recreation Fund), Frank donned his apron and got to work. He was that kind of guy. It was my privilege to know him and to learn from him.

He was the best XO of USS George Bancroft SSBN 643 Blue Crew. I remember in dry dock around 2 in the morning I was in Control with IC2 Ray Bennett. (IC1) Karl Dale was in lower level missle calibrating Hov 1. Ray was on Control Room deck reading Hov PM Manual and I was on head phones relaying step by step to Karl. It was really hot in dry dock. XO Jordan shows up in Control wearing his boxers and asks us what we’re doing? Ray explains we’re calibrating Hov 1. XO Jordan looks at Ray with manual in his lap and says “Bennett, you can’t read!” Bennett “ Yes Sir, but I like looking at the pictures!”...XO Jordan shakes his head, takes Manual from Bennett, sits down and proceeds to help us. Very cool.

My sincerest condolences to Laura and his family, Frank was a special guy. Attached are two photos, one of two submariners but from different eras. The second is Frank and Laura at a Christmas party.
I worked many years with Frank. He was tough, honest, and fair. After he retired he became known for his volunteer work with Mended Hearts, a candy stripe volunteer at Aiken Hospital, and helping Aiken's needy through St. Vincent de Paul Society work. Far beyond him being missed by hais family, the entire community will miss him.
