Obituary of Richard M. Hiergesell

Mr. Richard M. Hiergesell, Sr, died Saturday, morning, February 15, 2003 at Aiken Regional Medical Centers. A memorial service will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church on Monday, February 17, 2003 at 2:30 PM, with Pastor John E. Wertz officiating. A memorial service will also be held in northern Virginia at a later date. Interment will be in Hackensack, NJ.
Mr. Hiergesell was retired following 20 years of service in the U.S. State Department, Agency for International Development. Prior to that he spent 30 years working for United States Steel Corporation, for whom he was the southern Africa regional sales manager.
Mr. Hiergesell was born in Hackensack, NJ. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1943 to 1946. He was married to Doris Marie Dicke in 1944, and was the devoted father to 3 sons. He attended Duke University and later served as the Duke admissions interviewer for the Northern Virginia area and was a member of the Duke Alumni Association. He was active in several churches in northern Virginia and was an active member of the Bible Study Fellowship BSF International, in Annandale, VA for many years. After living many years in Falls Church, VA he moved to Aiken, SC in October, 2002 to be closer to his son.
Mr. Hiergesell is preceded in death by his parents, Frederick V. and Lula Mae Knowles Hiergesell and his wives, Doris Dicke Hiergesell, and Patti Hiergesell. His survivors include sons Richard Hiergesell, Jr. and his wife, Sharon Rose, of Raleigh, NC, Robert Hiergesell and his wife Deborah, of Aiken, SC and David Hiergesell and his wife, Patti, Haymarket, VA, grandchildren, Felicity, Tiffany, Blake, Perri, and Amber Hiergesell and Cassi Gerdsen and her husband, Rod, a great-granddaughter, Kate, and a step-sister Francis Joondeph, of Saddle River, NJ.
