AIKEN, SC - Elizabeth "Betsy" Dillion Cowperthwaite, age 74, entered into rest peacefully at her home on Friday, February 17, 2017. Betsy was born August 11, 1942 in Huntington, W.V. to the late John Milton Dillon and the late Elizabeth H. Dillon. She is survived by her two children: Elizabeth "Libby" Schmittdiel and her husband Patrick of Asheville N.C. and John K. "Sean" Cowperthwaite, III and his wife Linda, of Califon, N.J. Betsy was a loving grandmother to her three surviving grandchildren: Patrick "PJ" Schmittdiel, Jr., John and Lucy Cowperthwaite. She is also survived by her sister, Margery Turpin, her brother, John M. Dillon, III and his wife Robin, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Betsy received her Associate's Degree in Education at the Marjorie Webster Jr. College. Betsy was well known in the many different horse disciplines from the eventing world, organizing Essex Three Day in the mid 70's at Hoopstick Farm to being a competitor up to the Training Level until she realized her passion for Competitive Driving. She was Co DC of The Somerset Hills Pony Club while raising her two children, then becoming a serious international competitor in Competitive Driving, first as a navigator for an advanced pair of horses, then with her beloved single pony "MP". Winning many National Championships and having the privilege of competing at the Royal Windsor Horse Show in 1999 were just some of her many accomplishments with MP. She was an avid supporter of the USCTA and ADS while sitting on many different committees whether she was helping organize a competition, judging or being the FEI Steward for the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. Betsy was always trying to make her favorite sports the best they could be. After retiring MP in 2005 Betsy discovered her new passion of Ballroom Dancing and became a very serious competitor dancing with Ballroom in Motion. She traveled all over the country enjoying dancing expos and competitions as often as she could, winning many titles as she excelled in this sport as well. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday March 4th 2017 from 2:00pm - 5:00pm at the Elks Lodge, 205 Elkdom Ct., Augusta, GA 30907 with remarks beginning at 2:30pm. In lieu of flowers, Betsy requested that contributions may be made to the Hitchcock Woods Foundation, P.O. Box 1702, Aiken, SC 29802.
