ANDY WILLIAMS posted a condolence

My longtime friend, SC State Senator Tom Young of Aiken, called me yesterday evening to tell me of the sudden death of one of my heroes. I was about to speak at a revival in Chesterfield County, as a part of my current job in the domestic mission field, and I had to sit down a minute to gather my thoughts after learning that Irene Rudnick of Aiken had died.
Former SC State Rep. Irene K. Rudnick (D-SC HD 81) was a far, far better friend to me than I was to her. Far, far better. I worked around her for several years when she served in the legislature, and she was a true mentor to me. This past summer, dad and I were in Aiken for golf at The Palmetto Club, and I called her up. We met her for lunch. She was as loud as ever, and ate more greasy food more than I did that day. At 88, she was still going strong, still wore her infamous black lipstick, wore her famous shawls ("CAPES"), and still had her infamous beehive of jet black hair. She was 5 feet tall and full of fire for her entire life.
During my hard times with alcoholism, that most of you all know about due to my openness about it, she called me often, called my family often when she could not get up with me, and wrote me dozens of notes that I have saved and cherish. Unlike many, even today, she never looked down on me. Never. Not for one day. Not for one minute. Unlike many, even today, she never judged me when I was down. Unlike a few ordained and supposedly "called" ministers that I will not name here, she treated me like the Good Samaritan treated the Levite in the Gospel of Luke, 100%. She was a true ambassador for God. Her pulpit was all of SC, wherever she was. Irene K. Rudnick was "AIKEN ON PARADE!"
A picture of the two of us, from my times working at the state house in undergraduate and graduate school, hangs in my home office that she signed for me. Also, two campaign signs from her SC State House days and her unsuccessful race for the SC State Senate in the early 80s against the late, great Ryan Shealy. I treasure all of these items.
In a sea of nasty politicians with hate in their hearts, she was just the epitome of what God expects of all of us. She was always positive, and helped everyone regardless of political party affiliation. I never, ever heard her say one unkind thing about anyone, not even the people that ran against her or the ones that beat her. Her life was a testimony of how we all can be better neighbors.
In closing, during that meal in Aiken this summer at The Willcox, she laughed (EMBARASSINGLY LOUD A LOT), and said that she always loved me more than that "OTHER" Andy Williams that was once a constituent of hers. (The late singer Andy Williams owned a home in Aiken for years.) She stated that the famous Andy never would sing MOON RIVER for her. Well, I did just that. I found a piano in the corner where we were eating, and played the song and sang it for her. She stated after my gesture that she could now "go on living" after that. In my view, she is doing JUST that now, living well with God.
I am so very glad she was in my life for a time. I am so very glad dad and I had a meal with her this past summer. Irene deserved a much better fate politically, in my view. RIP, dear woman! The world and the state legislatures of America, need more Irene Rudnicks in them. I never want to forget who all helped me get to today, and Irene K. Rudnick surely did.
God bless her son, Morris, and her daughter, Helen, that I have known well for years. God bless those that loved her as I did, and MOST OF ALL, God bless her memory. She was truly a saint. Truly.
Amen.
Peace.
ANDY
*NOTE: I feel that the Aiken Standard's write-up, that I am posting here, is something that she would be very, very proud of.*

Dearest Helen, Morris and Families,
Aiken has lost a true, shining light, but heaven has gained the most brightest star in the Universe!! I personally feel that I have lost another Mother/dear friend. Mrs.Irene (I still called her that, even after I was grown.) always warmly welcomed Gina, me, David, and our parents into her home and heart. She always took time to talk to me, whenever we met at any event , and forever made me feel special by keeping up to date with, and asking questions about my life! She had such a gift of making everyone she spoke with feel like they were the only one in the room!! God bless you on your new journey, Mrs. Irene, and thank you for all your help and contributions to the people of Aiken and South Carolina, but thank you the most for touching our hearts!! I wanted to reach out to you during this sad time to offer my condolences. While nothing will completely take away your grief, by meditating on God's promises found in the Bible, you can find real hope and strength to keep going. I have found the scripture at Isaiah 25:8 to be especially comforting. Here it promises that God "will swallow up death forever, And the Sovereign Lord Jehovah will wipe away the tears from all faces."

My Tribute To A Sweet Red Lipstick Lady Who I Will Forever Love, Mrs. Irene Rudnick.
The Rudnicks & Clerc Families Have Been
Close Family Since The Sixties When Mrs. Irene’s Daughter, Helen, And My Sister, Gina, Became Best Friends.
My Sister, Gina Clerc, unfortunately was killed in a senseless boating tragedy on July 4th, 1980 at Clark Hill Lake.
This hit & run tragedy with Gina’s untimely death moved Irene Rudnick as a House Of Representatives Member to passionately and successfully propose a new law to change the prior “accidental” ruling of the law for any cause of death on water to now the ruling to be “manslaughter”. My sister’s sacrifice was not in vain with a champion of law that the Clerc Family will be eternally grateful in Mrs. Irene!

I wanted to express my deepest sympathy in this time of great loss. Ms. Irene was an amazing woman & always brightened my day, despite whatever issues she may have been dealing with. I've worked with her for nearly the past 16 yrs at USCA & this is certainly a loss shared by all.

Blessings and love to Mrs. Rudnick's wonderful family and many, many friends. Mrs. Rudnick was my law professor at USCA and she asked me to stay after class one day, I was really nervous wondering WHY. She shared an amazing story about herself and her early law career that I have cherished many times through the years. Her compliment to me, "I see that also in you." Her steadfast advocacy for what is right, nothing too small that it be dismissed reflects her service, compassion, and exemplary translation to life's purpose.... "Finis Origine Pendet" -"The End Depends Upon The Beginning." Irene Rudnick, a GREAT woman, thank you.

To Irene’s wonderful family. We came to Aiken in 2005. We had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Irene. She was an outstanding
woman who made Aiken so proud of her. As well as the State of South Carolina. She made women very proud. Her gracious efforts on behalf of others were appreciated by so many. She will be very missed by family and Aikenites. RIP

Ms. Irene was one the kindest, friendliest ladies that I knew. She always had a smile and kind word for all. She was so encouraging and kind after her son helped with the closing of my house. She was as excited as I was. May God’s peace which passes all understanding comfort you all. What a beautiful life -well lived.
