Graveside funeral services for Dr. George Francis O'Neill, Jr. will be private with Rev. William B Miller-Zurell, officiating. The family will receive friends on Sunday March 18, 2007 from 6-8pm at George Funeral Home & Cremation Center 211 Park Ave. SW Aiken.

Born in Yonkers, NY on September 27th, 1922 to the late George F. and Catherine Driscoll O'Neill, George was married to Shirley Hope Kampfer, on June 6th, 1943.
He served as a Commissioned officer in the US Navy during World War II.
Dr. O'Neill attended Mt. St. Mary's College, Columbia University and Fordham University where he received his Masters and PhD in Nuclear Physics under mentor Nobel Prize physicist, Dr. Victor Hess. He worked in developing the nuclear reactor for the world's first nuclear submarine, the USS Nautilus
Before moving to Aiken in 1953, he had lived in Park Forrest, IL.
Dr. O'Neill joined the DuPont Company at Argonne National Laboratory in 1950 and came to the Savannah River Plant laboratory in March, 1953. He retired in 1984. He was a member of the American Physical Society and The American Nuclear Society
An avid golfer, he was a member of Houndslake Country Club and had played in the same foursome for forty years... He loved fishing, boating and water sports. A kind, compassionate and honorable man, with a delightful sense of humor, he was totally devoted to his wife and family. He was a member of ST. Thaddeus Episcopal Church.
In addition to his parents, he was pre-deceased by a brother, Thomas Russell O'Neill.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Shirley, Daughter Sherry Steven Bassett and son Laird Penny O'Neill and granddaughters Erin Bassett, Kelly, Katie and Tori O'Neill.
