He also loved painting European and American landscapes, and traveled with Elouise to innumerable countries in Europe, North Africa, Mexico and Central America. His passion for the outdoors included raising cattle and sheep on their Greenwich, New York farm, and driving the back roads of Washington County, NY in their Amish buggy pulled by their faithful horse, Paula. Eugene was a proud Veteran of World War II, having achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer and Chief Radar Technician in the U.S. Navy. He served for six years, with combat experience in the Pacific arena, primarily aboard the destroyer escort USS Pavlic (APD - 70). On one reported occasion, the radar failed during battle. Eugene climbed the mast to repair the radar antenna and is credited with saving the ship and crew.
