Eugene Hugh Fellers, 97, of Aiken, South Carolina, and formerly of Greenwich, NY and Boerne, Texas, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday October 29, 2017. Eugene was born in New Philadelphia, Ohio to the late Walter William Fellers and Estella Snyder Fellers. He was pre-deceased by his devoted wife of sixty-eight (68) years, Elouise K. Fellers. He is survived by daughters, Susan L. Dick (Robert) of Aiken, South Carolina, Gretchen L. Whiting (Roger) of Granville, New York, three granddaughters, Nicole K. Whiting of St. Petersburg, Florida, Sarah W. Wilson (Bryan) of Sausalito, California, Jennifer S. Goff (Jameson) of Granville, New York, two great-grandsons, Logan S. Goff and Aiden P. Goff. He also leaves many beloved nieces, nephews and good friends. Eugene obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree from Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio and Masters Degree in Education from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA. In addition, he pursued graduate studies at the La Universidad Nacional in Mexico City and the University of Wisconsin. His academic career included serving as an Elementary School Principal, a College German and Spanish Instructor, and as a High School Department Chairman of German and Spanish studies. He retired from teaching at Glens Falls High School, Glens Falls, New York in 1974. Eugene was an amazing linguist who mastered the German, Spanish, and French languages. He also loved painting European and American landscapes, and traveled with Elouise to innumerable countries in Europe, North Africa, Mexico and Central America. His passion for the outdoors included raising cattle and sheep on their Greenwich, New York farm, and driving the back roads of Washington County, NY in their Amish buggy pulled by their faithful horse, Paula. Eugene was a proud Veteran of World War II, having achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer and Chief Radar Technician in the U.S. Navy. He served for six years, with combat experience in the Pacific arena, primarily aboard the destroyer escort USS Pavlic (APD - 70). On one reported occasion, the radar failed during battle. Eugene climbed the mast to repair the radar antenna and is credited with saving the ship and crew. Eugene's family wishes to thank the dedicated, loving staff at Shadow Oaks Assisted Living Home and Pepper Hill Skilled Nursing Home in Aiken, South Carolina. Special thanks to the devoted and caring staff of doctors and nurses led by Dr. David Zimmerman over the past several years. A funeral service at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Greenwich, NY, and internment in the Village of Greenwich Cemetery will be scheduled at a later date.
