Obituary of George Taliaferro Stribling

George "T' Taliaferro Stribling, beloved husband, father and grandfather entered into rest on Friday, December 14, 2007. He was born on July 7, 1922 in Gallipolis, Ohio to Taliaferro and Margaret Work Stribling. He grew up on the banks of the Ohio River in Point Pleasant, West Virginia and had wonderful stories of riverboats and floods. He graduated from Point Pleasant High School in 1939 with honors and was remembered for his "swell" trumpet playing.
He attended Georgia Tech in Atlanta, GA, graduating in 1943 with a BS in Chemical Engineering. Among his many activities and honors there were membership in ANAK, Tech's highest Senior Honor Society; Delta Tau Delta, of which he was President his senior year; A.I.Ch.E.; and the Baseball team as Manager.
He was commissioned as an Ensign in the Navy following graduation from Georgia Tech, did graduate work at MIT, then served in the Pacific Theater in WWII, including time as a Lieutenant jg on LST's and other special assignments.
He began his career with Allied Chemical Company in New York City after the Navy. On September 22, 1950 he married Louise Hartwell Anderson at Christ Church in Bronxville, NY. Shortly thereafter he was recalled to active duty for the Korean conflict and was based at Sandia in Albuquerque, NM. He served on the USS Oriskany as Special Weapons Officer.
George rejoined Allied Chemical, working in New York City and Morristown, NJ. He lived in Harrington Park and Madison, NJ. He remained active in the Naval Reserves until his retirement as a Commander in 1982.
In 1971 he moved to South Carolina with Allied Gulf Nuclear Services, settling in Aiken. He retired from AGNS as EVP and remained on as a consultant.
In his youth George was an avid tennis player and in his later years golf was a passion. In Aiken, he was a member of Palmetto Golf Club and the Midland Valley Golf Club. He was active in various Men's and Senior's Golf Associations. He was a member of St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church. His hobbies included genealogy, stamp collecting, and model train railroading.
George died peacefully at home with family at his side. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Louise Anderson Stribling; children Susan Elizabeth Stribling, of Washington, DC and Aiken, SC, James Taliaferro Stribling, of Tampa, Florida, Margaret Stribling Mumford, son-in-law Daniel Mumford, and grandchildren Colleen, Emily, Danielle, and Franklin Mumford, of Junction City, Oregon.
Memorial services will be held at 2pm on Saturday, January 26, 2008 at St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church, Aiken. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church, 125 Pendleton St, Aiken, SC, 29801 or Regency Hospice, 105 Summerwood Way, Aiken, SC, 29803.
