Clinard Hartwell Bud Cowan, 86, died Tuesday, January 8, 2008, at Greenville Memorial Hospital. Formerly a resident of Evans Road in Aiken, he had lived most recently in Greenville at the Gardens at Eastside and Haywood Estates. He was born in Fayette County, TN on June 17, 1921. He was the son of the late David Warren Cowan and Nola Augustine Howse Cowan. He served in the Army Air Corps from 1940-1945. After World War II he graduated from Georgia Institute of Technology in 1950 with a degree in Industrial Engineering and remained active in the alumni association. He worked at General Shoe in Hohenwald, TN prior to coming to Aiken in 1951. For over thirty years he worked at the E.I. DuPont Savannah River Site. Mr. Cowan was affectionately called Daddy Bud. During his retirement years he enjoyed walking in Hitchcock Woods and training his Labrador Retrievers. He was a loving son, brother, father, husband, and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years Carolyn Cannon Cowan and two brothers, Warren Franklin Cowan and James Walter Cowan, two sisters, Martha Cowan LaGraff and Virginia Cowan Kelley. Mr. Cowan is survived by his daughters, Carol Cowan Allen, Florence, SC, Patricia Cowan Thompson and her husband William of Taylors, SC and Nancy Cowan Swanson of Mt. Pleasant, SC. Two sisters Grace Cowan Shaefer, Inverness, FL, and Marjorie Cowan Miduch, Terlingua, TX. His grandchildren Harry Sholar Allen IV, Columbia, SC, Elizabeth Louise Allen, Columbia, SC, William Scott Thompson and his wife Anna McDavid , Summerville, SC, Travis Cowan Thompson, Wiesbaden, Germany, James Joseph Swanson, Mt. Pleasant, SC, and Caroline Catherine Swanson, Mt. Pleasant, SC. Graveside services will be in Aiken Memorial Gardens, Aiken, SC, January 11, 2007 at 1pm with Dr. Fred Andrea of First Baptist Church Aiken officiating. Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Heart Association, 4217 Park Place Ct, Glenn Allen, VA, 23060. George Funeral Home & Cremation Center is assisting the family.
