AIKEN, SC - Polly T. Durban, age 99, entered into rest peacefully on Sunday, February 5, 2017 at her residence.
Polly was born December 20, 1917 in Charleston, SC to the late Henry Christian John Tecklenburg and the late Pauline Livingston Tecklenburg. She received a Bachelor's Degree from College Misericordia in Dallas, PA.
Polly grew up in Charleston and spent the summers on Sullivan's Island where she met the love of her life, George Durban of Aiken, SC. She and George moved to Aiken after their marriage in 1940. They were married for 67 years until George's death in 2007.
Polly was a devoted and faithful member of St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church throughout her life in Aiken. She was an educator and taught in Winter Colony homes and at Aiken Day School and Aiken Preparatory School. After her teaching career, she became a real estate agent with Durban-Laird's, Inc.
She was a long-time member of the Aiken Junior Student Club. She loved music, dancing, cooking, playing bridge, and especially her family.
Survivors include a daughter, Patrice Tavernier (David), Aiken, SC; two sons, George A. Durban III (Debbie), Columbia, SC and Paul Durban, Aiken, SC; two grandchildren, Anne Marie Tavernier and George A. Durban IV (Nan); two great-grandchildren, George A. Durban V and Mae Weaver Durban; two sisters-in-law, Rosamond D. McDuffie and Esther H. Tecklenburg; a brother-in-law, G.L. (Ren) Toole; numerous nieces and nephews; and her beloved caregiver of nine years, Shirley Battle.
Friends may call on Wednesday evening at George Funeral Home from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.
A Requiem Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Thursday, February 9, 2017 at the old historic St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church, Park Ave., with the Very Rev. Father Gregory Wilson as celebrant. Final prayers and commendation will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
