Eugene Romie Carpenter, 95, of Vardaman, MS went peacefully to join his loving wife Mable Ashby Carpenter on Thursday, May 22, 2014, at Hitchcock House Assisted Living Facility in Aiken, South Carolina. Born April 4, 1919 in Julian, West Virginia, he was the son of the late William O. Carpenter and the late Eva Mae Tyler Carpenter. He was also preceded in death by brother, Truman Carpenter. He retired in March, 1972 as CMSGT in the Air Force, after serving his country for over 30 years.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in law: Carol L. and John E. "Jack" McElwee (Aiken, SC); a son and daughter-in-law Roger C. and Julia A. Carpenter (Vardaman, MS).
He is also survived by grandchildren and great grandchildren Erik and Jennifer Hernandez and children Evan, Alex and Adam (Rancho Cucamonga, CA); Dennis and Shalom Hernandez and children Amy and Ashby (Greensboro, NC); Lyndsi and Kevin Donahue and children Nash, Dax and AvynleeRae (Corpus Christi, TX); Paul McElwee and Megan Wardlaw (Denton, TX); David and Misty Murr and children Shaina, Anna and Tina; Suzanne R. Carpenter and her daughter Allison Bowyer; Valerie J. Lacey and her daughter Danica; dear friend Claire McElwee (Aiken, SC).
Funeral services were held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, May 31, 2014 at Elzey Memorial Chapel with the Bro. Billy McCord officiating. Interment with full military honors was held in Elzey Cemetery, Vardaman, MS. family received friends from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Friday, May 30, 2014, at Parker Memorial Funeral Home, Vardaman, Mississippi. The family would like to express special appreciation to Hitchcock House Assisted Living, Dr. Leo Muniz and staff, and Regency Hospice for the loving care of Mr. Eugene Carpenter during his 2 year stay in Aiken, SC.
