Obituary of William Joseph O'Leary
William (Bill) Joseph O’Leary, Jr., 77, went peacefully to be with our Lord Jesus Christ on Tuesday, April 3, 2018.
A Requiem Mass will be held at 10 am on Friday, April 13th at Old St. Mary’s Help of Christians Church at 203 Park Avenue SE, Aiken.
A Visitation is planned for Thursday, April 12 from 4-6PM at the George Funeral Home, 211 Park Ave SW, Aiken with a prayer service being said at 5:30 PM.
A Memorial Service will be held at a later date at Our Lady of the Cape Catholic Church in Brewster, MA. Interment will be at the Oak Ridge Cemetery at Dennis, MA.
Bill is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years, Dona. He is also survived by three sons, William J II (Annette) of Black Hawk, CO; Jonathan P. of Westminster, CO and Christopher M (Megan) of Lafayette, CO and a grandson, Nicholas M. of Lafayette, CO.
He was predeceased by his father and stepmother, William and Virginia O’Leary and his biological mother, Evelyn, who died at childbirth.
Bill graduated from Archbishop Stepinac High School, White Plains, NY in 1958 and the College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, MA in 1962. He received his Master’s Degree from New York University.
His business career was with the Bell System – first with New York Telephone where he started as a Business Manager in New Rochelle, NY and then to New York City on the Operations Staff. Bill transferred to AT&T Information Systems in 1983, where he was a General Manager, Global Services in New York City until his retirement in 1996. At that time, he and his wife Dona moved from Summit, NJ to Aiken, SC where they spent seven months each year and five months in their summer home in Dennis, Mass. While in New York, he was on the Board of the New Rochelle Chamber of Commerce and served as President of the New Rochelle Kiwanis Club.
Bill had several loves: God, Family, Holy Cross, Friends and Golf. His love of God included Mass and several ministries including a Eucharistic Minister, an active member of the Mary, Mother of the Eucharistic Praesdium of the Legion of Mary and a Perpetual Adorer. He was also a Knight, (4th Degree) in the Knights of Columbus, Council 3684. His love of Holy Cross was exhibited as Class Chair for the Class of 1962 for the past 20 years and serving on the Board of the Holy Cross Alumni Association. Bill loved his friends in Aiken, SC and Dennis, MA, as well as, his Holy Cross Classmates. He was a member of the Men’s Golf Association at Woodside Plantation in Aiken as well as Dennis Pines/Highlands in Massachusetts where he played regularly.
