Obituary of Mary Eileen Ferriter Hass

Mary Eileen Ferriter Hass, 59, died on Monday, March 5, 2012, at her home surrounded by her loving family after a courageous battle with cancer.
Mary was born on August 6, 1952, in Rahway, NJ, to Paul Thomas Ferriter and Kathryn Carney Ferriter. Three months after her birth, Mary moved to Aiken, SC, with her parents and siblings for the opening operations of the Savannah River Plant. She went to Saint Mary Help of Christians Catholic School and Saint Angela Academy. Following her high school graduation from St. Angela's, Mary spent one year at the newly opened University of South Carolina Aiken, then transferring to Winthrop College in Rock Hill, SC, graduating with a Physical Education teaching degree in May of 1974. She married her high school sweetheart, Robert A. Tony Hass on June 15, 1974, at Saint Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church. Over the next 20 years, Mary supported Tony's military career as an Army Officer's spouse. Moving from Ft. Benning, GA; Ft. Sill, OK; Ft. Greeley, AK; The Waterways Experiment Station, Vicksburg, MS; Ft. Leavenworth, KS; 2 tours at Ft. Stewart, GA; Ft. McPherson, GA; and finally at the Pentagon in Washington, DC, where they ended their career in the military.
Following Tony's retirement from the U.S. Army, Mary and her husband and children relocated back to Aiken. She became very active in the Houndslake Women's Golf Association, Houndslake Women's Tennis Association, and the CSRA Women's Tennis Association. She also was a substitute teacher for the Aiken County School System from 1995-1999. Mary worked part time as an Administrative Assistant for the South Atlantic Trading Company, Aiken, SC and as a Medical Records Clerk for the Smart Corporation from 2000-2005. However, her passion for golf, tennis, and bridge was where she focused her energy. The happiest part of her life was spending time with her loving and beautiful grandchildren, James, Sean, Maura, and Audrey. Her eyes lighted up like stars when they were around. Mary always had a smile on her face and was always willing to help her friends and relatives. Everyone loved Mary's charm and grace. She had many loving friends and family members.
Survivors include her husband of 38 years, Tony; daughter, Cristina M. Gillespie Jim of Fort Mill, SC; son, Timothy P. Hass Courtney of Pineville, NC; and four grandchildren, James M., Sean A., Maura A. Gillespie, and Audrey Claire Hass. Brothers and sister include John R. Ferriter MaryJo of Irmo, SC; Judith A. Ferriter Davis David of Aiken; David M. Ferriter, Kathy of Moore, SC; and Mark J. Ferriter Sally of Aiken with numerous nieces, nephews, and grand nieces and nephews. Mary was predeceased by her mother and father and her brother Thomas P. Ferriter.
A Requiem Mass will be celebrated by Fr. Maximino Tria on Thursday, March 8, 2012 at 11am at St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church. Pallbearers include Mary's nephews David R. Davis, Jason A. Davis, Adam P. Davis, Leland P. Ferriter, Robert M. Hass, and a family friend, Brad D. Hottel. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery. The Vigil Service will take place at 6pm in the funeral home chapel.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, 6-8pm at George Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 211 Park Ave. SW Aiken.
