AIKEN, SC- Alvin Dewitt "Dee" Herndon, 85, passed away Monday, January 18, 2016, in Williamsburg, VA.
Dee was born May 2, 1930, in Grover, NC, to the late Ernest Blanton Herndon, Sr., and the late Lorene Bookout Herndon. He married the former Esther Elizabeth "Betsy" Silver in 1951. Dee enlisted in the United States Navy in 1950, served on the USS Valley Forge (CV-45) during two cruises off the coast of Korea during the Korean War, and was honorably discharged in 1954. Dee and Betsy moved to Aiken in 1963 where he worked as an instrument supervisor for DuPont Construction at the Savannah River Plant. He was very active at the Aiken First Baptist Church and served several years as lighting director for the Aiken Diabetes Association's annual musical production. He loved to spend time in his vegetable garden and took pride in the achievements of his grandchildren. He retired from DuPont in 1993.
He married Julia Cobb in 2000.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Herndon was preceded in death by his wife Betsy; his second wife, Julia; three brothers, EB Herndon, Jr.; Warren Herndon, Sr.; and Robert Herndon; a sister, Margaret Herndon Kirk.
He is survived by two sons, Craig (Robbin), Jeffersonville, IN; Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Brad (Lori), Williamsburg, VA; seven grandchildren, Stephanie; Amanda; Chad; Cole; Alexa; Nolan; and Paige; a sister Mabel Herndon Dixon Goforth, Kings Mountain, NC; several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends beginning at 9:00 AM on Saturday, January 23, 2016, at George Funeral Home with funeral services following at 10:00 AM in the George Funeral Chapel. The Reverend Doctor Fred W. Andrea, III, will officiate. Interment will be at 3:30 PM in the Grover Cemetery, Grover, NC.
