Donald Blaine Boyer was born on July 8, 1934 in Ironton, Ohio at the Lawrence County General Hospital. Don graduated from Ironton High School in 1952 and earned a dual scholarship to play Football and Baseball at Eastern Kentucky University. During that summer he played 125 games as a catcher in games up to the AAA level. In the fall of 1956 he reported to Quantico, Virginia and was able to continue to play the game he loved so much for the USMC.
