Born Dec. 1, 1917 in Ninety Six, SC, Cecil was the youngest child of Arch McFerrin & Zoe Ella Owen McFerrin. He grew up on the family homeplace and spent much time working the family farm with his brother Earl and sisters Ethel, Eva, Bessie, & Ruby.
Mr. McFerrin was a 1934 graduate of Greenwood High School and a 1936 graduate of Greenwood College of Commerce. He also attended the University of SC in Columbia and worked for the Veterans Administration before enlisting in the US Army during WWII. After the war, Mr. McFerrin began a long and distinguished career with Bank of Greenwood later to become State Bank & Trust Co. and then Bankers Trust, working in and managing offices in Greenwood, Ninety-Six, Anderson, and Aiken. Upon his retirement in 1982, "Mr. Mac" - as he was affectionately known by his employees - was Executive Vice President & Regional Manager for Bankers Trust of SC since acquired by Bank of America.
As a community leader, Mr. McFerrin served in many capacities, often in leadership roles. While in Greenwood he served on the board of the Greenwood Chamber of Commerce, co-chaired the 1957 Greenwood Centennial Celebration, and also served as Commander of American Legion Post 20. In Aiken he served on the boards of the Salvation Army, Hitchcock Rehabilitation Center, United Way, Rotary Club, Aiken County Hospital, USC-Aiken, and the SC State Chamber of Commerce.
A member of St. John's Methodist Church in Aiken since 1966, Cecil shared his talents by serving on church administrative, financial, & endowment committees. As with his professional life, he would offer encouragement, friendship, wit, and wisdom to those around him.
After his retirement, Cecil enjoyed travel with his wife Jean, golfing with his best friends, and growing a variety of vegetables in his home garden. He was a voracious reader of everything from biographies to political, business, and financial publications.
Cecil is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Jean Tribble McFerrin, and their two children, Earl A. McFerrin & wife Susan of Concord NC, and Holly McFerrin Huber & husband Crist of Dawsonville GA. Also surviving are two very dear grandchildren, Michael Bradley Huber and Morgan Cecile Huber, also of Dawsonville GA.
The family would like to thank the staff at Eden Gardens Assisted Living, and Dr. John Baxley & staff of Aiken Family Physicians for their exceptional care and kindness. Special thanks also goes to Pat Bishop, Amy Timmerman, Brenda Stroman, and Martha Vinson, all of Regency Hospice. Their knowledge, wisdom, compassion and loving care truly made a difference.
