My prayers to the family. The teachers and students of Aiken El will miss Gretchen's patient and quiet sacrifices to do the best possible for her students. Gretchen worked to make even her most difficult challenges successful accomplishments for her students. For example, she successfully completed her technology project with her students to meet her evaluation goals this year despite her fears of having to accomplish most of this task on her own. Her awards for her bravery are surely being hailed upon her in heaven. My condolences to her family that she talked about so often.

MEMORIAL SERVICE TESTIMONIAL FROM SHARON STRONG IN ABSENTIA
As we head north from Aiken to Richmond, it is with regret and heavy hearts that we cannot be present for this memorial service. Therefore, I have asked Rita Dillon to please deliver this testimonial for me.
It is no secret that Gretchen and Cousin Brucie met through the Trinity/Squires connection. The Trinity girls endorsed Bruce wholeheartedly, even though it meant moving Gretchen to Colorado. Distance did not end the friendships ? in fact it solidified them even more as we had children at the same time. First came Eric Strong, and then came Meghan Bradford. Then came Meredith Strong, and then came Karen Bradford. And to everyone?s delight, then Scott.
We had many holidays, beach trips, shopping sprees and college shopping trips together.
But back when my children were little and we were concerned with the issue of who would care for them should anything happen to us, it was mutually agreed and legally documented that Gretchen and Bruce would assume this responsibility. What better love is there in friendship than to ask your dearest and most loyal friends to assume the role of parents? Although this never came to fruition thankfully, it was a comfort nonetheless knowing two friends that shared our every value would raise our children. What a beautiful relationship!
Now then, fast-forward thirty years. There are four beautiful grandchildren who have their beautiful grandmother Gretchen watching and inspiring them from her new, special place.
I commit to these boys that every chance I get, I will help fulfill the role of loving Auntie ? just as Gretchen committed to parenting my children thirty years ago. Dearest Bruce, Scott, Meghan and Karen, let me, together with my soon-to-be husband Ned, promise you that we will continue to be in your lives and the lives of your children. We already started our mission yesterday by taking Sam to the park and by giving Sam, Malachy and Adam their baths last night.
Let me honor my love and friendship with Gretchen by continuing to be a part of all of your lives.
I will end by acknowledging Gretchen?s love of life ? she lived life laughing, dancing, singing, sharing, teaching, parenting and loving all of us.
Gretchen, you have been a gift to us all. Now go be with Inga and Riley where you can laugh at all of us as we live the rest of our lives here on earth. We will join you eventually. We promise.
Love,
Shotsie
Rita Dillon added:
?I will personally add one last thought to honor our three Trinity friends with a quote from the poet, Dylan Thomas, from his poem ?Fern Hill.?
In the sun that is young once only
Time let ?us? play
And be golden
In the mercy of his means

Dear Bruce and Family,
Last evening I received a call from Pat Hafner Lonergan with the very sad news about Gretchen's death. Gretchen was my classmate at Trinity College. She lived directly across the hall from me, and I knew her well as a happy and vibrant woman. She was especially welcoming to me as I was the only transfer student to the junior class.
Although we did not keep in touch over the years, it does not lessen my sadness that she has gone from this world. I am so sad for you, your daughters, their spouses, and your grandchildren. We, Gretchen's college classmates, share the same age and stage in life. We are all blessed with wonderful children and fabulous grandchildren who bring tremendous joy and pride to our lives. It breaks my heart that Gretchen will be missing these golden years.
Each year Pat Hafner Lonergan, Tricia Ryan Bullis, Sue Provo Jacobs and I get together for a mini reunion. We've been doing this for some 17 years. Each year we always talk about Gretchen. We have very fond memories of her goodness. When the four of us come together in the year of what would have been our 40th class reunion, we will have a Mass offered for Gretchen. Our faith convinces us that even though Gretchen has foregone the golden years of her life, her heavenly reward is even greater than anything we experience in life.
My love and prayers to you and your family.
