A Naval Aviator's Heavenanonymous
I hope there's a place, way up in the sky,Where Naval Aviators can go, when they have to die.
A place where a guy could buy a cold beer For a friend and comrade whose memory is dear.A place where no blackshoe or porkchop could tread,Nor a Pentagon type would e're be caught dead! Just a quaint little O'club; kind of dark, full of smoke,Where they like to sing loud, and love a good joke.
The kind of place, where a lady could go And feel safe and protected by the men she would know. There must be a place where old Navy pilots go When their wings get too weary, and their airspeed gets low.Where the whiskey is old and the women are young,And songs about flying and dying are sung,Where you'd see all the shipmates you'd served with before,And they'd call out your name, as you came thru the door,
Who would buy you a drink, if your thirst should be bad And relate to the others, "He was quite a good lad!" And then thru the mist you'd spot an old guy You had not seen in years, though he'd taught you to fly. He'd nod his old head and grin ear to ear, And say, "Welcome shipmate, I'm pleased that you're here! For this is the place where Naval Aviators come When the battles are over, and the wars have been won. They've come here at last to be safe and afar
From the government clerk and the management czar,Politicians and lawyers, the feds and the noise,
Where all hours are happy, and these good old boys Can relax with a cool one, and a well-deserved rest! This is Heaven, my son, you've passed your last test!

Dear Marion
It was sad for me to receive your June 1 email dealing with Dale's passing at the end of May. Hearing the news caused me to reflect on the many good times we had through our Navy Reserve commitment at Willow Grove, PA. One can never forget our flights to Europe, Japan, Vietnam, and other far off destinations and the wonderful opportunities and experiences we enjoyed.
In all of this, I must say that Dale's professional and personal conduct was such that his character clearly demonstrated that he was an 'officer and gentleman.'
My condolences to you. If you are ever in the central Pennsylvania Harrisburg are, please do not hesitate to call. Sincerely,
O

HIGH FLIGHT
OH! I HAVE SLIPPED THE SURLY BONDS OF EARTH
AND DANCED THE SKIES ON LAUGHTER-SILVERED WINGS;
SUNWARD I'VE CLIMBED, AND JOINED THE TUMBLING MIRTH
OF SUN-SPLIT CLOUDS, - AND DONE A HUNDRED THINGS
YOU HAVE NOT DREAMED OF - WHEELED AND SOARED AND SWUNG
HIGH IN THE SUNLIT SILENCE. HOV'RING THERE,
I'VE CHASED THE SHOUTING WIND ALONG, AND FLUNG
MY EAGER CRAFT THROUGH FOOTLESS HALLS OF AIR...
UP, UP THE LONG, DELIRIOUS, BURNING BLUE
I'VE TOPPED THE WIND-SWEPT HEIGHTS WITH EASY GRACE
WHERE NEVER LARK OR EVEN EAGLE FLEW-
AND, WHILE WITH SILENT LIFTING MIND I'VE TROD
THE HIGH UNTRESPASSED SANCTITY OF SPACE,
PUT OUT MY HAND, AND TOUCHED THE FACE OF GOD.

I remember you always flying somewhere every school holiday as Pat was working flying and you, your Mom and brother went along with him. You have always talked fondly of Pat and I know you will miss him. Our heart and prayers are with you during this time.

Dear Marion,
Our lives have been so enriched by you and Pat. We started as neighbors in Aiken, SC four years go and quickly became the warmest of friends. You both became such an important part of our lives, and we shared many wonderful times and events. I am so sad that Pat is not with us, but he did his best to stay as long as he could. Your love, encouragement, and incredible care kept him feeling positive. He lives in our hearts and memories never to be dulled or erased with time. I will remember Pat as a gentleman of superior intellect, an avid reader, and a most compassionate man. He supported many animal rescue efforts here in Aiken and during Hurricane Katrina made considerable donations in time of need. He took such pleasure from his beautiful long-haired black cat Chickee Felina. It was a delight to hear his stories of their interaction, particularly the paw that so abruptly tapped Patâ??s arm to get his full attention. I did not know Pat in earlier years when he performed with bravado as a Navy pilot and flew for United Airlines. I applaud his many accomplishments. Yet it was the softer, gentler side of Pat that I loved so much. I was always touched by the love he showered on you, his loving wife and companion. When I saw you sharing all that life brings it lifted my spirits knowing that two could be so very much in love. Even though separated at this time, your love and devotion will continue until reunited in a place of great happiness and completeness. With personal sorrow, I share your loss and extend my heartfelt sympathy. I will miss my wonderful neighbor and dear friend beyond what words can convey.

Pat was, and always will be, a power influence in our lives. An example of all a father, father-in-law and grandfather should be. How could we forget the holiday dinners, being greeted by John Philip Sousa playing so loud? Or the days of listening to him play the clarinet, and playing along? Even after moving from San Diego to Aiken, Pat was a large part of our lives, and our visits were the highlight of the year. We were all stunned when he stayed up well past midnight last summer, just to visit & catch up. Our lives will never be the same, and always a little less full for his loss.
