Obituary of Ellen Alice Hubbart List
Please share a memory of Ellen to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Ellen Alice Hubbart List of Cumberland Hills, Aiken SC, died Monday June 5, 2017. She was born July 21, 1920 in Cumberland County IL. She was one of five daughters born to Horace and Myrtle Hubbart.
Raised in the Quaker religion, she left high school preceding WWII to work in a shoe factory. At the age of 19 she took a bus to Indianapolis, IN to enroll in a beauticians' college. While working in Indianapolis she met Marcus List of Orleans IN and four months later they married.
Mark was a greens superintendent on golf courses and he worked in Indiana, Ohio, and Illinois. During this time they became the parents of four children: Linda, E. Lee, Mark and Nina. Ellen was active in their children's lives, learning from each new experience. With the move to Illinois, Ellen joined Mark in running the golf course as she managed the kitchen and snack shop. Ellen became known for her homemade pies and golfers would call to reserve a tee time and a piece of pie.
Ellen and Mark retired early and moved to Cherokee Village, AR where Ellen completed EMT training and volunteered on the ambulance. Later she became the lead recruiter for EMTs. She was a tireless volunteer for the Spring River Presbyterian Church in Hardy Ar. She loved to go rafting on the Spring River that ran behind their house, with or without company. As their children grew up and settled across the United States and other countries Mark and Ellen traveled extensively with Ellen planning the routes they would travel and the sights they would see.
After Mark's death, Ellen moved to Aiken SC to live at Cumberland Village to be close to her family. With her diverse background she readily made friends at Cumberland Village, both at the "Big House" and at Cumberland Hills.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Horace and Myrtle; her sisters Helen, Iverna, Ina, and Irma all of Greenup IL, an infant great granddaughter; and, her husband Marcus. She is survived by her daughters Linda (Dennis) McGurer and E. Lee Nissen (Dean) both of Aiken SC; Nina (Kelly) Biensen, State Center IA: and son Mark (Jill), Reno NV; 7 loving grandchildren: Andrew McGurer (Mindy), Ellen Grimes (Chip), Ryan McGurer (Courtney), Jill Cottrell (Jeromy), Katie Elliott (TJ), Allison List (Darin Arigoni), Ryan Biensen and 16 great grandchildren.
Special thanks to Pam and Brenda as well as the staff from Regency Hospice for their loving care of mom for these past two years. And to the med techs and aides at Cumberland Hills, we will be forever grateful for the loving care you gave mom in the last weeks of her life.
A celebration of life will be held at the Cumberland Village Clubhouse with Holly Shoaf-O'Kula of Aiken's First Presbyterian Church officiating at 2 p.m. Friday, June 9th, under the care of GEORGE FUNERAL HOME. Because of Ellen's love of gardening, reading and children gifts honoring her life should be directed to Helping Hands, Aiken SC.
