Paula,
The memorial service for John was a wonderful tribute and celebration of John's life! I thought that the songs you selected were so beautiful and touching. I felt John's presence in the words and in the peaceful music.
Chairman Rowden asked that I pass on his message and condolences.
"I well remember John and his contributions. He was a talented member of my team as Chairman. He had a mind of his own and contributions to match. He is a reminder of better days. Marc"
I look forward to you finding Lake Martin here in Alabama on one of those back roads trips that you and John would always be taking to find new places to enjoy and photograph!

Paula and John: Terry and I vicariously join you, your family, and friends in celebrating John's life together. We so enjoyed our time with you both on Hilton Head beach and felt an immediate connection. We regret only that we weren't able to get better acquainted with John. Clearly, he was a special person.
When we go on future excursion(s) with you, Paula, we'll always save a virtual ring-side seat for John as we go. Meanwhile, take the time you need to think, to grieve, to collect wits, to grieve some more, to figure out next steps, to sit by the water. We'll be thinking about you. I am so happy for both of you that you found each other and multiplied your happiness together.

The Clokie boys and I will always remember John with great fondness. John and Paula's visit to Canada in 2006 was very special. We enjoyed hikes in Algonquin Park, hours of bird watching, solving Sudoku puzzles, and of course scintillating conversations. He always had lots to discuss, and we all enjoyed his wit and infectious chuckle. His encouragement and support of my son's education was profound and Trevor will always be grateful. John will be deeply missed at Marco Island. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Paula.

I cant look at this picture without smiling. When I think of John Austin I will envision an outdoor garden with warblers flitting beneath the bushes and a hint of a sea-breeze coming across the golf course. I will have a glass of white wine in my hand and be listening to some idle chatter on, say, multi-universe theory, or perhaps plasma physics.
Paula, Al and I are so sorry for your loss. Our time with you and John was wonderful. He was always warm and welcoming and we loved the heavy discussions with a light and witty touch. We value our friendship with you too, Paula, and hope to see a lot of you in the future.

I always enjoyed being with John. He combined vast experience on nuclear technology from his years at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) with broad intellectual interests and quick, incisive wit. There was never a boring conversation when John was present. He cared deeply about his country and often talked about his efforts to make the NRC come to the right regulatory decisions on nuclear power. He was a patriot. We will miss him.

John Austin was one of those truly intelligent and thoughtful human beings who always took the time to teach those around him in a gentle yet effective way. I had the privilege of working with him on national policy issues twice and both times he patiently dealt with my impetuosity and impatience while teaching me to think about and consider the broader scope and implications of an issue. He was unfailingly gracious and dedicated to doing the right thing for the right reasons. He was truly a gift to us all and will be greatly missed. Rest well my friend - you remain an inspiration.

Paula and John, the friendship we have shared over the last few years with both of you and through out high school with John are wonderful memories. Amazing conversations and fascinating stories.
