AIKEN, SC- Mary Helen F. Duncan, 89, passed on Friday, November 28, 2014 in Columbia after a short illness.
She was born in Doerun, Ga., the daughter of Richard L. and Stella P. Free. She was a graduate of Norman College, Norman Park, Ga., and worked for Civil Service. She was married to the late Maj. Earl L. Duncan, USA, for 33 years. Survivors include sons John E. (Diana) Duncan, Columbia, SC, Richard L. (Christine) Duncan, Knoxville, Tn. and William D. Duncan, Aiken, SC; a sister, Jean F. (Daryel) Newton, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla; and sister-in-law, Mary Free, Melborne, Fla. Her grandchildren were Ariel A. Duncan, Seattle, Wa., David E. Duncan, Knoxville, Tn. and John V. Duncan, Columbia,SC.
She was blessed with the love of her nieces and of the Valderrama family of Bogota, Colombia. She was predeceased by her brother, Richard L. Free, Jr., and sisters Louise F. Wallace, and Alice F Amerson.
After her retirement, she treasured the friendships made as a volunteer at Hitchcock Rehabilitation Center and as an ardent participant in the Wellness Program at USC-Aiken. She was a Methodist.
A visitation will be held at the Inn at Houndslake Sunday at 5PM.Graveside funeral services will be private in Sunset Memory Gardens, Langley, SC.
The family requests donations be made to Golden Harvest Food Bank of Augusta in lieu of flowers.
