Obituary of Richard Sterling Sullivan

AIKEN, SC - Richard Sterling Sullivan, Sr., entered into rest on Tuesday, July 4, 2017 at his residence surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Sullivan was born November 6, 1934 in Aiken, SC to the late Harry and Nellie Sullivan. He was a life-long area resident and communicant of St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church. Mr. Sullivan was very active with St. Mary's where he was an altar boy, a lifetime usher, former chairman of the Fall Festival which is now known as the Chocolate Festival, and past-president of the St. Mary Campground. Richard was a proud and very active member of the Knights of Columbus. He served in multiple leadership positions at the Msgr. George Lewis Smith Council of Aiken from 1958 until elected Grand Knight of in 1966. He served as District Deputy, State membership Director, and multiple other State positions from 1967-1978 until ultimately being elected to South Carolina State Deputy. He was also very active in the Knights of Columbus 4th Degree (the Patriotic Degree) serving as Faithful Navigator. In 1988, Richard was appointed by the Supreme Council as the South Carolina District Master - 4th Degree. Richard continued active service to the local Council, and Assembly, serving as the State Council Parliamentarian from 1995-2012. Mr. Sullivan retired as a Lab Supervisor after 40 years of combined service with DuPont and Westinghouse at the Savannah River Site. During the early years at DuPont he was called to serve his country as a Medical Technician in the US Army for two years in Lebanon & Germany. Additionally, he retired after 20 years of service at Security Federal Bank. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Linda Sullivan. Mr. Sullivan was a proud and patriotic man that provided service to others and his community. He was a mentor to young Knights and an advisor to others due to his knowledge of the order. From Tootsie Roll drives, to ringing the bells at Christmas time for the Salvation Army, he was a man that always lived his life with God, Family, and Self as his priorities. His integrity, character, and devotion of faith was a beacon of hope and example making a difference in the lives of others. He loved his wife Linda of 54 years, his children, his grandchildren, and great grandchildren with all his heart and soul. His presence will be missed, but his love will be forever in our hearts. Mr. Sullivan is survived by two daughters, Deborah Sharpe (Marc) and Sherrie Johnson (Mitch), both of Aiken, SC; two sons, Richard S. Sullivan, Jr. (Darlene) and Chris Sullivan (Melissa), both of Aiken, SC; eight grandchildren, Ashton Swearingen (Nicholas), Richard S. Sullivan III (Alexis), Jonathan Sharpe (Kristine), Mitchell Johnson (Wynonna), Shelby Johnson, Tyler Sullivan (Leah), Trey Bland, and Tyler Bland; and five great-grandchildren. Friends will be received this Friday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at George Funeral Home. A Requiem Mass will be celebrated 11 AM on Saturday, July 8, 2017 at the old historic St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church, Park Ave, with the Very Rev. Father Gregory Wilson as celebrant. Final prayers and commendation will follow in Graniteville Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Richard S. Sullivan III, Jonathan Sharpe, Mitchell Johnson, Tyler Sullivan, Nicholas Swearingen, and Trey Bland. Memorial contributions may be directed to the St. Mary Capital Campaign Fund or St Mary Campground, P.O. Box 438, Aiken, SC 29802. The family would like to thank Daybreak Adult Care Services, Regency Hospice, the Elmwood Park Neighborhood Family, and the parishioners of St. Mary's Church for the compassionate care shown to Mr. Sullivan.
