Mr. Harrie E. Carpenter, 84, of Aiken, SC, husband of Mrs. Marie Wood Hennings Carpenter, died Wednesday, morning, June 9, 2004 at the University Hospital, Augusta, GA. A memorial service will be held at 11 AM Tuesday, June 15, 2004 at George Funeral Homes, Historic Downtown Chapel, 211 Park Ave., SW, Aiken, SC, with Dr. Fred Andrea officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home. Born in Gaffney, SC, a son of the late Frederich Wesley and Ora Ellis Lyles Carpenter, he attended Davidson College and the University of South Carolina at Aiken and proudly served his country in the United States Army, during World War II, serving in New Guinea, the thirty-third division in the Philippines and the occupation of Japan, where he obtained the rank of Lieutenant. He retired as the president of an agricultural supply company. A member of the First Baptist Church of Charlottesville, VA, he was also a member of the Senior Men?s Club, Retired Officers Club, Sons of the American Revolution of VA Society and Kappa Sigma. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a step-son, Charles Hennings and his wife, Rita, Orlando, FL; step-daughters, Susan Neilson and her husband, Michael, New Canaan, CT and Laura Kampa and her husband, Paul, Northport, NY; and grandchildren, Cameron Neilson, Peter Neilson, David Kampa, Kimberly Hennings, and Kathryn Nerko. The family has requested that memorials be made to the charity of choice.
