A memorial service for Mr. Donn Byron Wright will take place at George Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 211 Park Ave. SW Aiken on Saturday, October 15, 2011 at 1pm with the Rev. Martha Ebel officiating. No flowers, please. Memorials may be directed to the Lake Forest College endowment fund, or to a charity of one's choice. Mr. Wright, 81, of Aiken, died Wednesday, October 12th 2011 at Aiken Regional Medical Centers. Donn was born on August 10, 1930 in Chicago, IL, the only son of the late Jospeh Wright and Marguerite Schultz Wright. He graduated from Lane Tech High School in 1948 and entered Lake Forest College IL, graduating in 1952. He was drafted into the army and served in the 101st Airborne Division. He and Millie were married in 1955. Donn taught history at Niles East High School IL, and eventually earned his Masters Degree in sociology from Northern Illinois University. He served as a guidance counselor at Deerfield IL High School and eventually changed careers in the mid-1970s and opened Northbrook Ace Hardware IL. He also owned Belvidere IL Ace Hardware and Buffalo Grove IL Ace Hardware. He served on the board of governors of Lake Forest College in the 1980s. In 1990 he and Millie retired to Savannah GA, and they relocated to Aiken in 2001, where he lived until his death. Besides his skills as an educator and entrepreneur, Donn was an accomplished jazz drummer. Donn was a voracious reader and enjoyed playing golf up to the end. His family will miss Papa Donn dearly. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his aunt, Juliette Wright. Remaining to cherish his memory are his wife, Millie, his two sons Jeb Lee Anne of Crystal Lake IL and Jason Leslie of Cedar Rapids IA, his three grandchildren Emily, Nathan, Grant and his step-granddaughter, Casey Dawson.
