Funeral services for The Rev. Luria E. "L.E." Cumbee, Jr., 83, of Ridge Spring, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 16, 2015 at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church. Officiating will be The Rev. Christi Pursey and The Rev. Mel Amundson, assistant to the Bishop of SC ELCA, under the care of GEORGE FUNERAL HOME. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Messiah Lutheran Church, 1106 Yeamans Hall Rd., Hanahan, SC, 29410 or Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, 1186 Mt. Calvary Rd, Johnston, SC 29832, designated to the Lutheran Southern Theological Seminary.
Rev. Cumbee, passed away on Monday, July 13, 2015 at his home surrounded by his family. Born in Aiken County, he was the son of the late Luria E. and Hazel Bryant Cumbee. Rev. Cumbee graduated with a Masters in Divinity from the Lutheran Southern Seminary (ELCA) in 1957. Upon graduating, Rev. Cumbee first served at Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Lexington, NC. He later served at New Jeruseleum Lutheran Church in Hickory, NC. In 1962, he was called to be the founding pastor of Christus Victor Lutheran Church in Fayetteville, NC, where he served until 1981. In 1981, Rev. Cumbee was called to serve as Pastor of Messiah Lutheran Church in Hanahan, SC, until his retirement in 1999. After retiring, Rev. Cumbee was the stated supply pastor for 9 years at Trinity Lutheran Church in Saluda, SC. He was also a Chaplain in the US Army Reserve for 15 years. Rev. Cumbee was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Laura N. Cumbee.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Faye Pitts Cumbee of Ridge Spring; sons, Michael Paul Cumbee (Lisa) of Ridge Spring and Stephen Craig Cumbee (Donna Mellott) of Pass Christian, Mississppi; a daughter, Allison Cumbee Haskell (John) of Ridge Spring; a sister, Virginia Cumbee Summerall (Milton) of Martinez, Georgia; 5 grandchildren, Gabriel G. Locklear, Leah E. Locklear, Richard L. Cleveland, Jr., Marc A. Cleveland and Kala M. Gantt and 7 great-grandchildren.
