Lt. Col. Wofford G. Clayton, US Army Air Corps, ret 89, of Aiken, died on Monday, July 11, 2011 at Aiken Regional Medical Centers. Funeral services, with honors, will take place on Friday, July 15, 2011 at 11am at Ft. Jackson National Cemetery, Columbia. GEORGE FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION CENTER, Aiken is assisting the Clayton family. Mr. Clayton was a member of Aiken Seventh Day Adventist Church. He was born in Ehrhardt, SC and served in the US Army Air Corps, twentieth Air Force, flying the "The Hump" in the Chinese/Burmese Theatre as a navigator and bombardier in the first group of B-29's that were placed into service. Completing his active duty, he continued to serve his Country in the reserves, attaining the rank of Lt. Colonel. In addition to his military service, he worked as an E & I Mechanic at the Savannah River Site from 1953 until his retirement in 1980. Wofford enjoyed gardening, fishing, woodworking and spending time with family & friends. In addition to his parents, Benjamin Ryan Clayton and Minnie Catherine Clayton, he was predeceased by a brother, Wilmot Clyde Hiers. He is survived by his loving wife of fifty nine years, Gloria Dowtin Clayton, Aiken and three daughters, Pamela Gregory Hamilton, Blythewood, SC, Cynthia Clayton, Rutherfordton, NC and Carol Clayton, Hendersonville, NC. He is also survived by three step-grandchildren, Meghan Hamilton Schultz, Benjamin Hamilton and William Hamilton and a step-great grandson, Hayes Hamilton.
