Funeral services for Mr. Lewis Macon Goodwin will take place on Sunday, April 2, 2006 at 2:00pm at George Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Inc., 211 Park Ave. SW Aiken, SC with Rev. Eddie Leopard officiating. Interment will follow at Aiken Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be on Sunday from 1:00pm until the time of the service. Mr. Goodwin of Aiken died Wednesday, March 29, 2006, at the age of 89. Born on the family farm in Chatham County, North Carolina, January 31, 1917, he was one of eleven children born to Rowena and Walter Sexton Goodwin. He graduated from Moncure High School in 1936 where he excelled in the sports of baseball and basketball; he worked after school for the Carolina Power and Light Company in Chatham County, NC. He continued working for the Carolina Power and Light Company after graduation, and married school classmate Mary White Stedman on January 8, 1938. In 1942 he began a 39-year career with the E. I. DuPont Company in Martinsville, Virginia. After a brief company move to Indiana he was transferred to the Savannah River Plant for startup by the DuPont Company in 1952 and worked there until his retirement in 1981. After retiring he continued to work until 1989 as a consultant for DuPont and Westinghouse. A Baptist by faith, he was a member of the Millbrook Baptist Church when he died. He was preceded in death by Mary Stedman Goodwin, his first wife of 44 years and mother of his three children; his second wife, Mary Cavanaugh Goodwin; and 9 siblings. During the past 10 years he fought a hard battle against Alzheimer?s disease and dementia with the help of a loving team of family, friends, and health care assistants, including Vera Wells, Lisa Cook, and Mary Annie Wienbeck. The disease slowed him down, but he never lost his zest for life and his love for the people around him, and he was courageous until the end. He leaves to cherish his memories his devoted life-sharing companion Sue Roe of Couchton, SC, and her family; one sibling Magdalene Goodwin Briggs and husband Leon D. Briggs of Gastonia, NC; son Lewis Roland Goodwin and wife Priscilla of Fayetteville, NC; son Harry Leland Goodwin of Evans, GA; son Thomas Wayne Goodwin and wife Kay of Greer, SC. Surviving grandchildren are, respectively, grandson Mark Lewis Goodwin, wife Jan, and great-grandchildren Sara and Mary Katherine of Adamstown, MD, and granddaughter Kim Goodwin Morander, husband Jeff Morander, and great-grandchild Madelyne Grace of Atlanta, GA; granddaughter Jennifer Goodwin Boatright and husband Scott Boatright of Smyrna, GA, granddaughter Ashley Claire Goodwin of Evans, GA, and grandson Bradley Macon Goodwin of Atlanta, GA; and granddaughter Virginia Lea Goodwin of San Diego, CA.
