Edmund W. Marx died March 10, 2009 following a lengthy illness. He was ninety years old. He was born in New Britain, CT, a son of August W. Marx and Loretta O'Neil Marx. He was a veteran of WWII, having served as a navigator on B-17's with the 15th Air Force based in Italy. He was a graduate of Washington and Lee University in Lexington, VA, where he attended on a football scholarship. He worked as a special agent with the FBI and later accepted a position with the National Cash Register Company in Philadelphia. In 1951, he was employed by DuPont Co, and moved with his family to Aiken to work in the security department, at the Savannah River Plant. Mr. Marx was active in community affairs. He served as a board member of the Aiken Chapter of the American Red Cross. He was a founding member of the Fermata Club where his family enjoyed many years of swimming, tennis and social events. He also helped in coaching the club's swim teams. Many remember Ed jogging on Whiskey Road and swimming laps at the pool. He was an active member of the Aiken Community Playhouse and assisted with Boy Scout Troop 110. He was a volunteer tutor of the English language with the Laubauch Literary Assoc. and in 1955 he was elected first president of St. Mary's Home-School Assoc. Mr. Marx is survived by his wife of 64 years, Gloria Conroy Marx, Aiken; and in order of birth: Bill Marx, Newport, RI. Marilyn Robert Kogan, Aiken; Christina Gary Hampton, Lawrenceburg, TN; Brian Lisa Marx, Baltimore, MD; and a devoted friend, Robert Trow, Aiken. Mr. Marx's seven grandchildren include five grandsons and two granddaughters, also a great-granddaughter. A Funeral Mass for Mr. Marx will be celebrated by Rev. James L. LeBlanc on Monday, March 16, 2009 at 2:00pm at St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church Building Fund, PO Box 438, Aiken, SC 29802 or to the Aiken Chapter of the American Red Cross, 1314 Pine Log Rd, Aiken, SC 29803.
